The name Shih Tzu (pronounced SHEET sue) is Chinese in origin.
Literally meaning "lion dog" the name was given to the breed because of the resemblance to a lion in its facial "mane" and long coat. The Chinese reportedly bred the Shih Tzu to look as much like a lion as they were able to.
