Be very careful, these dogs are "trendy" right now and there are a lot of unscrupulous breeders out there breeding unhealthy dogs. Absolutely, positively do NOT buy a dog from a pet store. These are puppy mill dogs (No matter what the kid behind the counter tells you. They have no idea where the puppies come from).

I urge you to contact breed rescue and adopt, rather than buy a dog. You can look on www.petfinder.com, enter the breed(s) you're interested and search that way. You can also google blah-blah breed rescue and see what you get.

If you MUST get a dog from a breeder, be sure its a responsible breeder. You want to meet the parents, see how the pups are raised, ideally meet other puppies that have come from this same breeder, etc etc. The bitch shouldn't be bred more than once every couple of years and she should be at least 2 years old. It doesn't necessarily matter if the dog has AKC papers (even puppy mill dogs get AKC papers, and they're just disasters). There may be a breed club in your area that can recommend a reputable breeder.

Good luck!

It seems that there is rescue in every state for every breed. Here is the official rescue for Scottish Terriers with the AKC, they can direct you to a local rescue org.

I agree that finding a rescue is better for the dog and rescues. There are so many in need of homes, including pure bred animals. This helps relive the rescue, allowing them to save another dog and gives you a happy dog that is already spayed and neutered, thus preventing health problems and more homeless animals.
