FIP is a viral disease that affects many systems in the body. It is a progressive disease and is almost always fatal. It is found in saliva and feces of infected cats so cat to cat contact is the most common means of spreading the infection. Kittens may be infected by their mother transplacentally. The virus can live in the environment for 3-7 weeks but typically after 3 weeks it is too small to cause infection. Diluted bleach at the rate of 1:32 will kill the virus.
There are 2 forms of FIP the wet and the dry version - with the wet version the cat gets a "pot belly".
Treatments for cats with FIP are typically a steroid.
