Hi mapey, Yes, They are a great pet. We adopted a retired racing Greyhound just over a month ago. It's been a super experience. I have adopted dogs before, from animal rescue leagues and from breed rescues.
We spent a few weekends meeting the hounds and taking our time talking to the people who run the kennel to ensure a good match. We also did a lot of Greyhound breed research - they are a special breed - really gentle, very friendly with people and other dogs as they have been socialized from an early age. We have another dog also and we took him to meet the top pics to make sure the match was good there too.
We had considered other shelters or a puppy but we are very happy with our choice, a really great dog. She was 'house trained' in a day as they are kennel/crate trained already. She is great with everyone in our family. Happy to meet other dogs etc. She's calm and mellow inside, sleeps a lot, follows us around, loves to be close and loves people. She does not bark at people or to guard - a nice plus, they are not protection dogs. Our girl will make some noise if she's excited, but many of these guys are practically silent. We have a fenced yard - a nice to have for these guys as you cannot let them off leash. They are sight hounds and can get lost if they can't 'see' home. They are great on lead as they have been trained to respect the leash (most of them do). They do not need a ton of exercise, not as much as a lab for example, just a few short walks a day and they curl up and sleep happily the rest of the time.
As with any choice of a pet, take your time and wait for the right match though - some of them need (like any breed) training time and socialization with different situations or sometimes small animals (they were trained to chase the 'rabbit' at the track remember) - but many are actually very 'cat' friendly.
Check out these links and good luck.
