Zonisamide is a newer anti convulsant only recently used on dogs. It has few side effects but limited data exists. In 2007 a study was done to evaluate zonisamide as an add on to traditional therapy using phenobarbital/or potassium bromide. Mild side effects of ataxia ( wobbly or out of balance symptom) and some sedation were noted but there was a decrease by 50% seizure rate in canines. It's a very expensive drug so its use has been limited.
