Economic Crisis: Credit Reports

We've all seen the (admittedly somewhat entertaining) freecreditreport.com commercials.

However, this is NOT free. IT is a paid service.

It is federally mandated that the each of the credit reporting agencies furnish you with one free copy of your credit report each year upon request. Granted, it won't have the credit score, but if you can read and understand your report, you don't need that to see how you are doing.

Twice I've seen on Mahalo Answers frecreditreport.com as an answer to where to get credit reports. This is because of their (apparently successful) marketing blitz.

My question is twofold:
  • Should the gov't be pimping this policy harder given the current lending market and need for people to improve their credit?
  • What kind of marketing can beat out the frecreditreport.com jingles?

I saw those on http://www.ftc.gov/freereports :)
I think it's a good step, but it's fighting fire with fire. But we need to remove the heat from that fire with massive quantities of "cool". What's cooler than folk-singing-slackers singing jingles?

Up until recently all I could find are the credit reports that require you to have a "free" subscription to something and they charge you if you forget to cancel. www.annualcreditreport.com is the only one I've found that is actually free but like you said you don't get a credit score.

Can you rephrase your question #1? Pimping out what policy?

To your second question, the only jingles that I have found to come close to the freecreditreport.com ones are the Hillshire farm commercials. I had the "I said a Beef hotlinks" one stuck in my head for (not exagerating) two weeks after I heard it. Sadly I can still recite it. But I do love the beat!

The policy found at http://www.ftc.gov/freereports.

Annualcreditreport.com is free because it is the implementation of a government policy REQUIRING that the three credit agencies give you a report ever year when requested. It's not a commercial venture.
