As the update is available for free, I would recommend updating your phone via iTunes and them explore what apps will work on your phone version.

1. MMS won't work - no one uses it anyway
2. Tethering won't work - it doesn't work in the US anyway
3. No GPS - you never had it anyway.
4. No Bluetooth A2DP - if you don't know what that means, you won't miss it.
But what you do get makes the upgrade worthwhile. Like...
1. Cut copy and paste from a anywhere
2. Spotlight search 'phone-wide'
3. Landscape keyboard, even in SMS and mail
If your phone is jailbroken at the present time, you will need to jailbreak it again after upgrading to 3.0. If you don't know what that means, your phone is probably not jailbroken.

You will be able to update your original iPhone with the new OS 3. Some features may be unavailable due to hardware limitations of this early iPhone. For details of this please see this article http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19512_7-10266646-233.html?tag=mncol;txt As the update is available for free, I would recommend updating your phone via iTunes and them explore what apps will work on your phone version.
