Can you download ebooks to a Kindle from a source other than Amazon.com?

Yes, you certainly can! In fact, any e-book that is available in .pdf format can be emailed to a Kindle. This will allow the e-book to be read just as any other e-book is on the Kindle. There are also sites that will allow you download books in the Kindle format and can be transferred to directly to a Kindle when it is connected via USB. The main advantage of purchasing through Amazon is that you can have your ebooks wirelessly delivered through their Whispernet service. If you don't mind transferring your books through USB or email, there are lots of options to choose from. A few sites you may wish to check out:

Yes, you can. Kindles can read books in the unencrypted Mobipocket format. You can get books in that format from Baen Webscriptions or the Free Library, from Fictionwise (only the ones that say "Multiformat"—NOT the DRM/encrypted ones), or a number of other places on-line. All you have to do is download them to your computer and sync them in via the USB link. (See the Baen guide in "sources" below.)

You can also download public domain books directly into the Kindle from Feedbooks (see the download guide link in "sources" below).
