Currently it's pretty even between Windows 7 and XP, XP starts up faster but 7 shuts down faster, XP is better with PCMark05, 7 is better with Sunspider.
Your particular results will vary depending on what you run, but I think the focus of Microsoft's upgrades is going to be on Windows 7 now, streamlining it and making it better than XP.
In time, 7 looks to be better.
