Park close to the entrance, or close to the cart return?

When you go shopping, do you try to park close to the entrance so that you don't have to walk very far when you first go in, or do you park close to the cart return so that it is a quick deal to return the cart after you unload your purchases into your car? As you probably guessed, I'm a close-to-the-cart-return parker!

Great question! It is very interesting to see everyone else's responses and to think about how we can be similar but so different at the same time : )

As I thought about your question, I realized that strangely, I'm kind of in the middle. Funny, I'm a middle child. Huh. When I look for a parking space I'm not ever really looking for a spot up in front, but if one is open I'll take it and smile. I also don't try to park right beside the shopping cart return - for the same reason mentioned before - as my car might be a target for stray carts rolling back to the corral. Not everyone is like that golfer in the commercial who can send the cart perfectly into the row.

Some of us, I will not mention any names, drive around the parking lot forever waiting for the right spot. I do not do this. I do find that I never seem to be able to get the car in straight on the first time - and this is usually when my spouse is in the passenger seat. He thinks I do this to drive him crazy, he, he.

To each his or her own! Happy Parking.

Here's a humorous video of city parking, showing how one person decides to create the 'perfect' space.

I like to walk so I park far away from both.

When I am by myself, I generally park wherever I can find a space, doesn't matter where in the parking lot it is. If my mother is with me, which she is many times since I drive her everywhere, then I try to park as close to the front of the store as possible, especially if the weather is hot or very cold. Many times, I will drop her off right at the front of the store and then find a place to park.

If I am by myself and the weather is rainy, snowy, cold or extremely hot, then I try to park as close to the front of the store as possible. Other than that, I will park anywhere as long as it isn't in such a tight spot that the cars on either side of me are likely to hit my car when they open their doors.

I am with Msmuffintop on this one. I park as far away from everything as possible. I park far away from the door, far from the carriage corral, and oh-so-very-far away from other cars. Unfortunately, I can’t stop other cars from parking near me once I have left my car.

Anyhow, I do like to walk to and from the store so that is part of the reason for my parking selection. I am also terrible at parking so it benefits me to park where there are fewer cars.

If my only choices are 1) near the entrance, or 2) near the carriage corral, I would choose the carriage corral. It’s probably the least likely place to have a carriage bump into your vehicle, since so few people actually bother to return their carts to the general vicinity.

It depends on how you feel really. If you park far from the entrance, you will feel more relieved when you can quicky put the shopping cart in the return. On the other hand, if you are looking to get in and out swiftly, parking closer to the entrance is the way to go. I like to park farther from the entrance that way when I exit with groceries I can get a nice little walk to my car.(my version of exercise)lol

I park close to the exit at Toys R Us, because they have one-way entry and one-way exit. Otherwise I still park close to the entry. I live in a cold climate, and most of the year I try to minimize the distance between my warm car and the warm store.

I don't use the cart return, but just leave it somewhere that it won't block another car's parking space. The stores have employees who gather carts. And despite what the signs in the parking lot say about reducing costs, yeah it might reduce *their* costs, but they aren't going to pass those savings on to you.

I try to park closer to the cart return area. I usually try to return the cart to the proper area. Rolling carts can be a hazard not only to parked cars, but also to moving vehicles. As well, I don't think that the employees of the store make enough money to have to retrieve everyone's cart. To me it's just a courtesy to return it to the cart corral. If it's cold or raining outside for me, it's also cold or raining outside for them. My husband parks as far away as he can, or so it seems to me. I've never quite figured that out since our newest car is a '99 Saturn. But he does, and he always returns the cart to the corral. Aldi's, a smaller national chain, requires that you pay a quarter for a cart, and you get the money returned when you take it back to the corral. I think that's a good idea and should be implemented at other stores.

I park close to the entrance as I just leave the cart by the car. Where I live all the stores have cart boys in the lot retrieving the carts as most just leave them on the side where they are parked.

Since I have severe back problems that make it difficult to walk any kind of distance and I have a handicapped placard, I usually try to park as near the front as possible in a handicapped parking slot. Of course, that doesn’t always work, especially if all the handicapped slots are already taken. I have to admit that I will drive around at least five minutes round and round to see if someone will return and leave a handicapped parking slot empty for me to use.

I don’t really care where the cart return is. When I am done with my cart, I usually look around and see if there are other people on the way into the store and offer them my cart. That way I don’t have to try to return it to the proper place and they have the convenience of having a cart.

Parking Perks:

Have you had at least 30 minutes of exercise on the day you go shopping? If not, park FAR away from the store entrance so you can get in a walking workout. VERY important!

NEVER park close to the cart-return. This is a scratch and dent area. People in a hurry (and children trying to help) often just give the cart a push until it stops. I have also seen carts on a windy day become mobile until stopped by the nearest vehicle.

Your question reminded me of my Aunt's cute, comical parking lot prayer:
"Angel of the Parking Lot, Guide me to thy perfect spot".

Make it a safe, healthy decision!

I actually try to park pretty far away from the store! I like the added exercise of having to take a stroll, and I find that parking a good distance away from other drivers keeps my bumpers and door panels from getting dinged and bumped so much. Even when it's raining I enjoy the shower and just keep smiling at all the silly people who duck and run like they're about to melt.

If that happens to be near a cart return....well then I'm probably not far enough away. Cart dings, no thank you! Not that my car's anything special, but I'm sick of people's carelessness messing with my car.

So it's a win-win-win--exercise, safe car, and a chance to leave the closer spaces for the melty rain people and those guys who circle the lot for ten minutes looking for the perfect space while I'm already in the store.
