Well, being a big chicken... I always try my best to avoid scenarios that paranormal activities are likely to occur. However, I thought maybe I'd be the first crazy person to step forth to get the thread started.

It's my understanding that children are more likely to see paranormal activity. That us adults are conditioned to filter this "non existing" behavior as we age. I used to live in a house that was over 100 years old. My son would never go into the bathroom alone, the entire 5 years he lived there. When he got old enough to talk, he would tell me that there was a man in our bathroom. Now, my son never had "imaginary" friends or "seen" anyone other than this man that frequent our bathroom. The entire time we lived there, the man would visit him in the bathroom. My son would say "there he is mommy, don't you see him?" I could tell when my son seen this man by the look on his face. His eyes would follow this person that I could not see.

We have a place in Louisville that you can spend the night at. It's called Waverly Hills. It was an old experimental hospital. A nurse hung herself in there. Google it and look at the images if you want to see creepy. This place gave me the creeps before I even knew what it was. You can feel a vibe from the place just passing it on the interstate. Very Creepy! You couldn't pay me to spend the night in the parking lot.

I'm talking my friends into going there. I was given charge of finding scary places to visit this Halloween. I am the master search monkey in this house. I'm also the biggest skeptic in the house- believe in spirits on a paranormal scientific level, I don't have a looming fear of death (something I have found contributes to avoiding things that my not be a lethal as thought), and I am not a religious man. So, when I deem something as potentially scary, they tend to get behind that belief (and me).

There is a theory that states, all humans used to be more connected to the spirt world. Some where along the way we chose to ignore it. Though at times, I don't think the spirt world ignores us.

I don't want to check out the link, you can't make me...incidentally I'm a chicken too!

@meyermv ... I am seriously a big chicken when it comes to stuff like this. According to my best friend, we are the type of people that poltergeist love! Ugh! (because we believe and we are scared I think) Anyways, that link isn't so bad. It didn't bother me that bad because it doesn't really show anything. It's the pictures that you have to clink another link for that is scary in my opinion.

It's true that children's minds are much more open than adults and I completely believe your story.
My best friend has a three year old who, for quite a while, would wake my pal up because he was giggling in the middle of the night. Matt would go in to see what was going on (thinking he was playing) but the boy would always be standing in his crib and say, "Daddy, there's a little girl in the closet."
Major creepy.

And I've heard of Waverly - it's an old T.B hospital and indeed, tehy did do a number of disturbing experiments there to help cure T.B.

The nurse who hung herself is only one of the spirits there (she stays in room 502 incedentally). There's a number of spirits who stay there, including a number of children who seems to enjoy playing with balls and want the living to play with them.

I have a, well, lets say I'm not afraid of death. Been that way for a while. I can say that by my experience, no one is 'fearless', When I lost my fear of death, I gained a fear of missing something.
In turn, I have done a lot of crazy things in my youth. When I was 19, I had 4 lesbian roommates. We all shared a bed. Now... before anyone beams out in praise or what have you... they were lesbian. Well, two of them were bi, but dating the other two. They didn't work, were lazy, loud, and messy. I was the only bill paying person in the apartment. So... the pleasure of having 4 semi-nude women in my bed was overshadowed by the fact that I was usually asleep and needing rest for work by the time they decide to pile into bed and wake me up. (I was a workaholic when I was young)
This took place after discovering I had a spinal tumor and landed me deep into the beginning of me becoming a 'goth'. So human interaction was at a stand-still anyways.
What I did do was take to sleeping in the cemetery across from my apartment from time to time. It really was more to the tune of me not wanting to be messed with while sleeping. If you came across someone laying in a cemetery in the middle of the night, would you mess with them? I still joke to this day that it was the best bunkmates I ever had: never wake you up in the middle of the night, never snore, always already in bed. I slept next to this grave for Tommy. He was my age (born in 1977) and died when he was 16. I often imagined what comics he might have read, what movies he liked, what music he listened to. I imagined conversations with him. He was more in to country music than I could stand and liked a few movies I wasn't too keen on... but otherwise, we mostly liked the same stuff.
One night, while sitting by his grave with my brother, Glenn (not imagined and I heard a strange noise. Tommy's grave had a bench, and despite my personal weirdness, I also went there to think or to talk about my problems with Glenn. This night, we were discussing how to get rid of the lesbians. The conversation was cut short by this hybrid meow/bark. When he was with me, he preferred to have flashlights so I would also take one too to make him not feel self-conscious. We saw this ash grey cat... except the sound it was making along with its noticeably long neck was completely off and its eyes were slightly illuminated as animals often do when light shines its direction, however, no light but moonlight was on it. When we did shine our lights on it, the eyes glowed a bit more, naturally even, but the cat it's self did not. Everything around it lit up except it. And now, with lights on it, it seemed to be a dark grey instead of ash colored.
There was no mistaken about the neck though. Common house cat sized with about a 4-5 inch neck. We both got up and it let out the strange noise again. I then moved to see it up close... and it darted off.

Me and my brother never saw it again though we did search for it. To this day, I still have no idea what I saw.

I know this is a bit brief in content, but... I figured I'd contribute anyways.

Jd-when I was walking from the street to my apartment last night, I happened to glance over towards our garden (when I do, it’s normally still day light out, but I got home late last night), it was pretty dark in the garden, because of the trees that surround it.

I immediately thought about the cat story you told above. Then my brain started to work. I was then also looking for glowing eyes, or a cat, with a long neck, and my ears perked up to listen for a meow. Now that I sit here and think about it, there are outdoor cats where we live, and even if a tame cat showed up…I probably would have ran, just because of your story. Agh! I’m such a chicken…I have to ‘man’/buck/soldier up one of these days. :o)’

Some spirits stay, and some spirits don’t.

Well that’s great that you can still live a full life, and it’s liberating for you, and it doesn’t seem to be hindering you much. I recently heard an old joke that pertains to your comment "We're all dying, act accordingly." The guy was talking about dying healthy, of no pains, how terrible! :o) You might as well use your body while you have it. Drink, eat and do what you will. You’ll only lose the end years anyways. :o)

That is a very interesting article (the first two or so pages I read...I have a short attention span...).
I've always been a bit confused about this ‘soul’ business though.
Why is it that only humans are considered to have souls?
What makes us so different from all the other animals that we would have souls and not them?
Do we perceive that we have souls, because we believe we are the only animal with religion?
If you believe in evolution, when did the soul enter our beings, as we were only instinctual before?
Are there humans born without souls?
Where do souls come from? How are they created? What is their abundance?
Is the only time a soul leaves a body, after physical death?
Why would it leave? Where would it go? Does it get recycled.

And most importantly…why is it that a body seems to have an endless supply of snot! Ahem…sorry, I have allergies, and am not feeling wonderful today. :o)

@shadowbear I've been chomping at the bit all day on that one actually... and yes, the research is dated. To my knowledge, still a theory. Yes... I see you point now. I'm on a constant "rank and file" process... sometimes I let the point I'm making get the better of me. I should have said "Now, in theory, humans..."

The newest information I have found is 1920. From there, the research is never picked up after Duncan's death for being thought as heretical by some, immoral by others. It really just faded out of science from there. I did find this though, which to some may offer a counter-claim to the statement I prematurely made, and to others, perhaps for others- symbolic maybe?

@jdhatred, you made this statement...
"Now, it's been proven that humans are the only animal with a soul"
At best the information that you base this on is simply a hypothesis, not nearly a proven fact.
If you have any more up to date research then the 109 year old limited experiment that you base this on I would be interested in reading it.

Strange things affot in the cemetary... That's a pretty weird story. Did you continue staying there after you saw the cat? And, did you finally move away from your roommates?

@meyermv I actually do that... ironically, I stopped using drugs and severed the contact I had with my drug dealer of 3 years because it had bled out to the people around me. Not with me, but in others using the same drug I did. I'm not going to go into details of what because I am still against the use of drugs.

I am a little pleased I had an impact on you. Not so much that it was negative, but, it is October. I guess I can give it a pass.
It was posed to me that perhaps it was a guardian spirit of a sort or the manifestation of a person with a love for cats (like me!)
(looks around for my Haunted America book)
Booyah! Found it!

Damn... must be in a different book. Anyways, point is, a guy that owned this huge manor estate had a great love of dogs. He had dozens of them. Loved them to bits (not literally) At any rate, he died. (late 1800's I think) Not long, after, his family put all of the dogs down and dived his estate. It came to pass that years later, phantom dogs were sensed or spotted by several people. These spirit dogs were friendly, if not playful. To my knowledge, they still haunt the estate. Just can't find the damn book!

Now, it's been proven that humans are the only animal with a soul (the soul weighs approximately 21 grams for those not aware... no I'm not joking). With that, I surmise that it is a manifestation of the dead man, not the dogs, playing out his greatest passion. If it were (and could have been) the dogs, I would think them to be a bit more aggressive than they were and not how the now dead man last remembered them.

More on the weight of the soul. Very intriguing!

Oh yeah... oh, and you want to hear the crazy part? (this was some 14-15 years ago) The apartment I was living in was last occupied by a woman that was murdered by her boyfriend on year prior. I was the first to occupy that apartment after her. Not one notable supernatural event.

And yes, I continued to visit the graveyard. It was my safe place in my darker times. Never saw the cat again. The neck was honestly the most unusual feature. Being a 'cat person' I've heard some odd meow's before.

I've known I had a tumor all this time, honestly, nothing to be sorry about. "We're all dying, act accordingly."
It's quite liberating. I understand the characters in "The Bucket List" feel differently, but I have lived a partially dangerous life. Knowing what will kill me won't be crippling old age is a relief. Knowing roughly where to set my life goals to is great. Little uncertainty rules me and my habit of finding out instead of wondering is a boon to my success.

A few years ago when I was still a Hmong Christian, during my first stint of college, I decided to go home one weekend. It just happened to be the first weekend I had free in a month, and it also fell on a Halloween weekend. I know how it sounds already, but this is how it went.

So when I got home I had this uneasy feeling. I couldn't pin point it, or rationalize WHY I was having the feeling, or how to get rid of it. I didn't want to go to sleep, because I was still feeling uneasy, and really wanted to get rid of the feeling, before I went to sleep. As the night went on, my mom went to bed, then my brother, and then my sister. She and I decided to camp out in the living room. She slept on one of the sofas, and I fell asleep on another. I want to say it was just about midnight (my sister and my mom stayed up late, and they were both asleep, so it sounds right) when I finally gave into the fact that I wasn't going to get rid of this feeling, was getting tired, I fell asleep.

A couple of hours later I awoke to a noise. It came from the front foyer, behind me. It sounded like the back of two spoons being hit together. (Ahhh, I'm getting goosebumps just remembering it!) When I was fully awake I thought to myself, all the lights are off, no one is awake but me, that noise should NOT be happening. So I shook my head, I don't remember why. I think shaking my head attracted the ghost. Immediately after I shook my head, I felt 'sleepy' and immediately had a 'dream'. This is odd, because not many people dream immediately after they fall asleep, it usually takes a bit of time.

In this dream, I was in a class room and the teacher was passing out homework. She didn't pass it out to me, so I let her know, and she handed me a sheet. In real life (still mostly asleep), I reached out away from me, grabbed air and pulled it to my chest. When I fully awakened again I thought to myself, how...odd. So because of these two things I finally realized there may be a spirt walking around. JUST IN CASE it was trying to give me something not physical, I extended my hand out over the couch and shook it.

In a fraction of a second I felt as if someone was climbing over me (from behind again), it hit my head on its way up, twice, as if two knees hit me. I felt pressure on my chest, and felt as if the weight of the world was on me. I couldn't move as if my arms and legs were pinned down, could hardly breathe, and there was this buzzing noise, that came and went like the sound of a passing train or sirens. (Ahhh, more goosebumps). This went on for what seemed like forever! I pushed and I pushed and I finally got whatever it was off of me.

I finally understood what that uneasy feeling I had earlier was. Other times a sitting ghost has visited, I always had an uneasy feeling during the day, when I was home.

The next morning, after I told this story to my family, my brother confessed to me that he and a bunch of friends were telling ghost stories the night before. As there were two other traditional Hmong families living around us that still practiced Shamanism, it had apparently attracted and empowered one spirit that was close by. It showed itself to the story tellers. Yes it freaked them out, and one of them told their parents. Apparently if you say an incantation, and throw a bean to the area that the spirit was (a Shamanistic practice), its supposed to drive it away. It didn't!

To this day I keep my hand under my pillow, and do not extend it out over the edge of the bed. For the longest time I didn't know why I do that, but I figured it out.

I later learned there is name to this type of ghost, the 'Sitting Ghost'. It sits on your chest when you are vulnerable, most often just before you fall asleep or during sleep.

Some sleep scientists believe this to be common occurance, and that many people experience it. It happens just before sleep. This theory a bunch of croc.

OK, I can give them the whole sitting ghost bit, to have pressure on your body. What about the noise I heard that sounded like two spoons hitting each other? What about the two thumps to my head? What about the noise I heard, while it was preventing me from moving or breathing? I did not imagine those.

That i some crazy stuff going on. Did you ever experience it again?

Also, I've heard of "sitting ghosts" as well and they can be extremely scary for obvious reasons. Usually, they are trying to communicate to you but can't get your attention any other way.
Still, no thank you. You're a brave person!

meyermv's Avatar
meyermv | 1 year, 7 months ago Report

I have had other 'sitting ghost episodes', but nothing recently, and nothing to that affect.

Actually, there has been an odd correlation. Two years after I decided that the Hmong Christian Faith was not for me, the amount of episodes decreased, but I don't know if that number is significantly large...as I sit here and think about when and where it has happened, the number keeps going up, so maybe there is no correlation after all! CRAP!

I think it depends on the place we live at, and how much spiritual activity there is. This is one of the biggest reasons why I don't want to commit to a mortgage, until I know there is no spiritual activity. I believe that I have more of a spiritual connection, just by my roots, than my husband does. So I will be more affected by it then he would be. Agh!

Some people theorize that a 'sitting ghost' is trying to 'communicate' and wants something from you. Whether this 'want' is evil or not in nature, I don't know. It sure feels evil though.

But like the 6th sense has taught us, even though the ghosts may be scary, that doesn't mean they want to physically hurt us, typically. I have never actually seen a ghost, and hope to never see one. As stated above, 'I'm a chicken', and not a hawk. :o)

I believe that some people, for whatever reason, are more intuitively inclined to be open to paranormal experiences. But I also think that the majority of paranormal experiences are easily explained. There was a television show at one point that locked a group of people within a house that was just constructed simply for the purposes of the show. They were then nonchalantly told in a fleeting conversation that there was a murder there once upon a time (a false assertion, since the place had just been built). Over the period of days, people were absolutely convinced that they had seen paranormal things, experienced paranormal activity, and they fed off one another until it became almost frenetic. At the end of the experiment when they were let in on the show’s premise, they were aghast and unbelieving; only two people said that they didn’t have any paranormal experiences within the house. I believe that those two people actually said that they did have paranormal experiences to fit in with the group, and then recanted. The rest were still positive that they had experienced something paranormal, and felt a bit silly. It’s the same with psychics, I do believe that some exist with a gift of an extra sense, but I don’t believe in psychics that collect cash for telling you where your dead ancestors are. Quite simply, there are things in this world that will always be unexplained, and I do believe that some paranormal activity is “otherworldly.” But most of it, in my humble opinion, can be explained.

I’ve had friends who have stated that they have unequivocally been visited by dead loved ones. I don’t pass judgment because it gives them a great deal of comfort, and I genuinely am pleased for their experiences. Inwardly I think it just may be a manifestation of their longing to see their loved one again - but it gives them a great deal of peace, so whatever it is, I’m happy that it occurs.

Indeed we cannot explain a lot of things that aren't Supernatural or paranormal which end up having an explanation, just one that the person expereincing it would never have known (as we've learned from Ghost hunters regarding exposed electrical wires and even loose boards in the floor).

Still, there is a LOT we will never understand about the universe and the things that surround us. I prefer to keep my mind open to things, naturally, and find a plausible explanation for these things. However, once the logical has been explored, one must consider the alternative - which would be the paranormal.

meyermv's Avatar
meyermv | 1 year, 7 months ago Report

For the most part I agree with you. A LOT of experiences are manifested, like the creaking of the door being moved by an invisible hand ... called the wind or simply a draft. Sometimes a moving shadow is simply a trick of the eye, or something physical is moving.

And certainly, just because things can not be explained, doesn't necessarily make it supernatural.

But how does one explain having eyes on you, a presence, or having an uneasy feeling, or feeling two bumps on your head, when everyone is sleeping? Not all the people who believe in these things, or experience these things are nut jobs. :o) So we can't rule that out! ;o)

Um.. Which to share hmm.. I guess I will Share Spirit Said and it had happened :) .. I was in denial that lightning actually hit me in this incident at first cause I was stuck on the crispy critter myth. I later when i went in for an x-ray on my shoulder injuries when the x-ray doctor freaked out asking me if I knew I was hit by lightning.. I asked how many times? She counted 6 times.. I have experienced over that in number since.. as you hear me state in my video getting a little nervous stating I am not going for strike 15 or 16 here! I tend to try not to count the strikes now cause I do not want to be in the world record for it that is around 33....The scarring is on my tendons, legaments and bones.. That is my proof. my daily acheys and pains, messed up sleep schedule... When I prayed to become a conductor I did not mean a lightning rod I meant a railroad conductor.. Not the 3rd rail :P!.. Just for a lil humor take care all :) .

Spirit Said, and It happened.
By Dana C. L.

It happened on September 29th 2002.

On the morning of September 29th. I awoke at 3:00 am. I had this
feeling something important was gonna happen. So I closed my eyes and
asked to know what it was.

I then opened my eyes and looked at my TV. It appeared as if it
glowed. Then I glanced outside and saw a cloud in the distance, and I
heard a feminine voice through my clairaudience.

She Stated, "Go upstairs and wake your parents. Make sure everyone is
in bed. Your house is gonna get hit by lightning again."

At first, I sat there and wondered if my mind was not making it up. I
looked at the storm cloud in the distance, and new I should get up to
at least shut down my mothers computer. Then I found myself
unplugging things around the house as well.

I got to bottom of the stairs, and then was arguing with myself... I
have always had a fear of lightning.. So I did not want to go up them
stairs. But I knew I had to.. and if something did happen.. I knew I
would not be able to live with the guilt of not listening to my
Spirit friends or guides.

I proceeded cautiously up the stairs.. and tip toed quickly passed
the upstairs bathroom.. remembering the last time the house was hit
by lightning. I was in the room below it.. then and remembered the
awesome fireball that came out of the corner of the ceiling as well
as a book falling open.. to a page about the Call to Shamanism... And
remember out of all the responses in the world.. my first response
was, "Am I dead yet?" stated in humor.

I then proceeded upstairs into my parents room. I looked outside just
as the storm was coming in. Did not want to wake my parents as I
figured they probably would think I was just being scared again. (I
use to wake them all the time as a child or coming leaping into the
bed.. always had a fear of lightning.)

I then heard Spirits voice tell me, "Go downstairs Now!"
I quickly walked out the room. Passed my little brother's room.. and
saw their door close. .. I thought to myself,"unhuh.. they the little
sneaks are sneaking" and then giggled.

I walked towards the top of the stairs. Then had a feeling to close
the bathroom door... Just after I closed the door. I saw lightning
traveling on what I though was roof (turn out to be the metal plant
holder on the window sill.), and then it stopped. I shouted at the
top of my lungs, "The House was hit by lightning again." Figuring it
was done with. Then I started to one step down the stairs. Saw one
flash out the window on my back.. not sure if I was curious of what..
but I think after asking a question, "Is this my call to Shamanism?" .. saying.. no I can not be that
lucky.. found myself reflexively.. dancing up 8 stairs and to the stop stairs felt tingles on my feet... although looking out the window I saw nothing... But I suddenly felt my hair raising on
end.

I knew immediately that the lightning was hitting, so I jumped into
the air.. Attempting to jump backwards down the stairs....

Instantly a Bright flash went a towards me.. my entire body went
numb, I saw a blue streak, and it felt like a giant magnet was
pulling me forward by the chest. I heard the thunder go from a high
pitched eeee... down to that lower rumble in
and instant.

Then the bright flash had turned into a sparkly.. pattern as it was
so bright on my eyes.. and It felt like I was literally flying
backwards into oblivion. With the image of black sparkles and falling
backwards and downward feeling... until it appears like I was flying backwards through the universe...

I saw what looked liked stars a bright cloud.. and then what I later learned they call the Pleides star formation.. at the tail end of the cloud I saw another bright flash I knew I was in heaven had my spiritual eye open for one second then closed them.. and heard the words "Welcome home" .. and I said home? I don't want to be home yet.. this is nice and all but I have to live still. Please, let me live to do Spirit work, and railroad work.. as I then was also worried about how my biological sister would handled my death.. and said.. thought if I do not get to live I hope someone comforts her and helps her.. but before the thought finished...

I felt someone catch me, and I was able to see wing like things... and Sandals. It
was my guardian Angels. They caught me and I landed on my feet at the
bottom of the stairs. (As when I leaped down the stairs I did a backwards no handed flip)

Either due to the excitement or due to being possibly hit by that
lighting. I was literally babbling like and idiot loudly and
uncontrollably for 30 minutes according to some of my siblings. (I later find out this is a symptom of lightning strike)

My mother came running down the stairs asking was wrong. I could not
talk and was getting mad. Finally. My speech returned and the first
thing that came out of my mouth was, "Spir.. Spir... Spirit Said, to
go upstairs and wake you as the house was gonna get hit again, and I
was suppose to make sure everyone was in bed" My moms response
was, "Oh Come on now". Then I told her, "It Did Hit!, It Did!" (I was upset not only cause that was the first words my mouth could make but I squealed them like porky pig in a frying pan..) she did not believe me at first. Then she asked Did you see the big
fireball?! .. Between being frustrated and hurting.. and not being
believed.. I cried out loud!. "Yes, Moooom!".

She Told me to go back to bed... And then went upstairs. I knew she
had not believed me. (She till this day does not.)

By then it was 4 in the morning.. and I could not sleep. I was burning up skin was blood red.. I did not care if it was still storming I was frying hot and stood in the ice cold shower for 30 minutes.... then got redressed.. as I poked my fingers through the little holes in my shirt and pants wondering where the hell those came from all of sudden... I could not
sit still I hurt and paced the house, and Drank tons of water.. as
well as tried eating something to get that metal taste out of my
mouth.

I finally calmed down and was able to lay on the couch...
So I tried to sleep.. but just ended up laying there staring at the
ceiling or walls..

I suddenly heard my Dad and brothers come down the stairs.
Then heard my brothers asking Dad if they had nightmares.. or if I
was hit by lightning last night. They both claimed they dreamt I was
hit. But both were silly dreams in description.
(About my doing some funny raindances in front of them, and they describing me shaking my booty at the clouds.. going nananana.. they had me laughing listening to them.. as they knew I'd never dance like that.. but were disapointed like most of the world for not being able to watch my entire raincalling process.. Spirits forbid it.. )

One of them noticed me on the couch and ran into the room, and asked
me what had happened, as they never heard me cry out or act the way I
did.

I told them, "Spirit told me to go upstairs and wake my parents,
because your house is gonna get hit by lightning again." Then when I
went into there room was told to "go downstairs now"

My little brothers eyes got really Big, and he asked, "That Was
You?" "I thought it mom!. I thought she was on her way to the
bathroom so I waited. Then I heard you yelling and stuff!"

Then he had a ghost white look and his face,..throw himself at my feet crying hugging my legs.. and thanked me for
listening and doing what I did. Never, in my entire life did I meet such a face full of gratitude as I had from this child..

I am glad I listened to Spirit that morning. But I am saddened at
myself. As at first I felt hurt and betrayed as I felt they put me in
that position of feeling like I was hit by lightning on purpose. But
now I know that they were giving me a gift of experiencing the energy
of a storm, as well as gift of saving the life of my little foster
brother. (Who did return to his parents weeks later, and from what I last hear was doing great in sports and school, and really going somewhere in life.)

I had many experiences I can share. I am still a beginner but what
has happened so far is awesome. I also believe I was hit that night.

Here is a photo I took of lightning striking the house that is the window I was standing in front of when I was hit but the bolt in this photo... Took out my old crappy computer. .. That strike is towards the end of the video, the one at the beginning was actually a Shamanic lightning strike demonstration... This ought to let you know that I have numerous experiences with the paranormal, and my work with thunderspirits .. well truth is stranger than fiction in my life always has been. Keep your eyes peeled as I will be putting my true stories up on my website and selling them in a book.

This happened June 19th 2010 so as you can imagine I usually stay far away from this side of the house. This is not at my home this is another relatives house. My home I am working towards.. It has lightning rods.

A couple notes about Shamanism. I know a little bit about it. The traditional Hmong practice it a lot, though not many know that Shamanism wasn't the original 'religion'. I don't like to use that word, because in Shamanism there isn't really ONE God you 'pray' to, it's like many little Gods or spirits that you 'talk' to, and ask favors of. You would certainly 'pray' to your ancestors.

My mom was in this 'religion' for a while. In Thailand, apparently there are lots of spirts that make things happen. I believe there are many spirits that we bump into, or walk through...etc on a daily basis. Again as the 'theory' I had above states, we choose to ignore them. Anyways, my mom said that she was sick one time, and since her brain was weak, many spirts showed themselves to her. I remember being scared just thinking about it.

In reply to meyermv below: I am not familiar with the Hmong Tradition of Shamanism. Yes. You are right Shamanism was not the first religion, animism was...yes, Most Shamans work with more than one Spirit, and work with their ancestors.. some pray to them some just work with them. My Grandpa who was a Christian would spiritually slap me upside the hide of I prayed to him :) , but I work with his spirits as well as many others. My stories above is not about Shamanism really at all. What it is about is how Spirit used me to save the life of my foster brother who if I had not gone up those stairs that night to be where I was hit by lightning my brother would not have heard the door shut with the light off assuming it was my mom going to the bathroom.. she thinks she does not wake us up if she uses the bathroom in the dark we giggled about it for years.. So he heard me come out of my parents room and shut the bathroom door the lightning strikes me at the top of the stairs.. Spirits used me to save his life .. That is what the story is about as far as being a Shaman I was recognized before this incident but this was one of many that the spirits made it clear to me not to argue with them telling me I am not a Shaman as I was telling them nah I am no a Shaman I am a spiritworker bzeeeeeeeet wrong. .. its like okay fine I am a very lucky shaman I get the point.. But I prefer the title Heinzist for myself :) in the end.. regardless of what I was recognized as.. take care.. and yes mind your mother do not talk with the spirits if they keep approaching you approach someone for help. It can be a sign of health or mental health issues .. Not all cultures and practioners of Shamanism are always good paths some paths are very dangerous and negative..
