Other than size, what is the difference between Spitz and Samoyed dogs? At a distance they sure can look the same!

It is likely that the modern Spitz has Samoyed in its ancient ancestral family tree - as historical accounts bring Nordic herding dogs into Europe with the Viking invaders.
The Samoyed dog is white and is still primarily a working breed.
The Spitz can vary in color and usually are tan. The modern Finnish Spitz, the Pomeranian and the more rare German Spitz are all closely related and are in modern times owned as companion dogs - and are members of the non-sporting group.
