Other than France and NorCal, what regions in the world are famous for wine?

Tip for best answer: M$0.37
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Germany has excellent wine in the Rhine River Valley area, and North Carolina is becoming a rival for Northern California. North Carolina is producing several unique types of wine, and some traditional styles that are capturing many of the wine festival awards.

Spain, Italy, Portugal, Germany in the north and probably Argentina and I think Southeastern and Southwestern Australia has become wildly popular. There has to be a pretty temperate climate to grow good wine grapes and from what I have observed is that similar quality wines can be produced from similar geographic regions. I'm originally from Rhode Island and we have vineyards there that have been compared favorably with French and Californian vineyards because they lie around the same latitude. If you look at the world map you'll see that the wine regions of South Africa, Australia and Argentina fall into the same latitudes in the southern hemisphere.... somewhere between 50 and 30 degrees. ( wikipedia)

Here is an extensive list of wine producing regions in numerous countries including maps.

Over 60 countries have commercial vineyards, but the most notable wine-producing regions (besides France and California) include parts of Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, Germany, New Zealand, South Africa, and Spain as well as US states outside of California. Different varieties of grape grow best in different climate and soil conditions, which can vary over very short distances, and some of the best wines of a given variety may come from somewhere unexpected.
