What is in carrots that helps with peoples night vision?

Always been curious about this because I have eaten a lot of carrots in my younger years and i have excellent night vision. I've been told by people that carrots are the reason but I would like to know exactly why.

Parents have lots of tricks to get their kids to eat their vegies. One often-used persuasive tale is that if they don't eat their carrots, they'll go blind, or at the very least, not be able to see in the dark.

But there is a little amount of truth hidden inside the statement. Actually carrots help you in your vision because of vitamin A present inside it.

----quote----
If you don't have enough Vitamin A, you won't have healthy skin, a healthy immune system - and good vision. The Vitamin A travels in the blood to the retina (in the eye) where it is converted into a chemical called "retinal". When light hits this retinal chemical, it changes shape. This starts off a process, which ends with electricity travelling to the visual centres at the back of the brain - which turn the electricity into the wall-to-wall sensation that we call vision. No Vitamin A means no retinal in your retina, which means no electrical signals travelling to your visual centres.

So, if you don't get enough carotenes or Vitamin A in your diet, eventually you will suffer problems in your vision.

Therefore there will be no improvement in your vision by eating carrots unless you already have some problems in your eyes due to vitamin A deficiency. But definitely carrots won't help you in your night vision.

Hope this makes a clear idea to you. If you are still unclear, refer the sources below.

carrots really do give your eyes a boost because they contain beta-carotene, which the body is able to convert into vitamin A, an essential vitamin for healthy vision.

The short answer to this question is the vitamin Beta Carotene. In fact our bodies convert Beta Carotene to Vitamin A when consumed and if our bodies are in fact lacking Vitamin A it can cause a rare condition called "Night Blindness". Read through the attached article.. interesting stuff.
