I think both Gaga and her director have gotten Beyonce on some gooooood stuff! Only explaination I can come up with.
I'm still angry at Mahalo for coaxing me into watching the video. I know, I know I clicked it, but it was made to be so alluring I couldn't resist. At least now I can rant about it in an educated way. That's about the only benefit to watching this "movie."
I wasn't particularly offended by this video, nor was I particularly entertained by it. But I thought the answer was much more entertaining than anything Lady Gaga has ever put out..

Most interesting part: 0:57 (I read a lot of symbolism of being "genderblind" and all that into this scene, maybe I'm over-interpreting it):

The rest of it was absolutely ridiculous. The costumes I expected, I mean it's Lady Gaga, and the lesbian theme I'd already heard about and I didn't have a problem with, but it disappointed me. I'm not a fan of videos that over-emphasize the sensuality of same-sex relationships, like they're all just trashy to begin with or something. Plus, a lot of this video seemed to be done just for the shock value - again, I shouldn't be surprised since this is Lady Gaga, but it seemed a bit over the top. This video was like an experimental, indie porn movie or something. I applaud her creativity, but I wasn't a big fan of the video in general.
Side note: ワンピース (wanpiisu) means "one piece" or "dress" in Japanese. Not sure why Gaga used it as a derogatory term. "Ein, zwei, drei" are of course "one, two, three" in German. Again, some kind of allusion to "coolness by using foreign languages." Who knows.

Lady GaGa is a brilliant, icy hot, and brand new Madonna.
7. What would I like to see as a follow up?
A full length film with similar cultural references that starred additional and current culturally relevant stars of music and film but yet sill held the theme of using bits and pieces from other films and cultural references. Additionally I would hope that the next episode was filled with Easter eggs of trivial and hard to see unless you know kinds of minutia.

But it's the same sort of shock value sort of video we have come to expect from young, something to say and prove about their sexuality female pop icons since Madonna did the 1984 performance of "Like a Virgin" at the MTV Video Music Awards.. not that there's anything wrong with young and hyper sexual female pop stars declaring their rampant sexiness and individualism on stage and in videos.

When we look back to 1984 now the "Like a Virgin" performance does not seem trashy but wow have we become jaded since then. Madonnas breakout show that night was trashy and disgusting then.Liz Rosenberg Madonnas publicist says her ex leaned in to say this during the show "Her career is over before it even started.' Of course, I was petrified." (ref) from the same source Rozenberg herself says "Madonna took it so much further than anyone knew she was capable of,"... "Some people thought she was the greatest thing ever, and other people thought she was disgusting."

And in 1990 her video "Justify My Love" brimming with lesbian sex, S&M, nudity, and bondage was banned from the very television network that she launcher her video career on MTV.(ref)

Really with just a quick search for review and opinions of the 1984 "Like A Virgin" show it is very easy interesting to see that parallels between Lady GaGa and Madonna.
More then trashy but now quite tame Madonna videos including "Erotica" full of sex and "Like a Prayer" with the symbolism of burning crosses.
To me the comparison is so in plain sight I would bet if in a "feels like answering a question" mood Lady Gaga is asked "Was Madonna an inspiration for your career?" if in a sober and non smartass mood she would simply state "Yes".
Yes, but when Madonna did it, it wasn't about killing people and it...wasn't...trashy. "Like a Virgin" was artistic because she was dancing around like a trollop and it was obviously diametric to the title of the song. Plus, if you added up the talent of all female pop artists right now, it wouldn't sum to the talent that Madonna had.
Maybe I'm just biased. I miss the 80s, even though I was too young during them to know what's going on.
I think part of the brilliance is duetting with sometimes-good-girl icon Beyonce. But, mostly, just the gleefully over-the-skimpy-topness is what makes this an instant classic.
Of course, the "see, I told you she didn't have a dick" was a great line, but there are so many more to choose from.
What I also find interesting is that Virgin Mobile is OK with its phone service associated with bad coverage. (And, yes, I know that GaGa has a big deal with them, and that the visibility is great in and of itself.)
I am in awe of the cleverness of her (their) marketing machine!

The opening scene walking through and seeing the other "prisioners" is classic. Women's lib and freedom of expression in America is unbelievable!
