On August 26, 2009, Dugard, now 29, showed up at a California police department. Reportedly, two people were arrested in connection to her abduction. A press conference is scheduled for 3:00pm today (August 27, 2009).

@joyanny and @angieh while I agree that the story is interesting and a discussion might be fun, the name of the site is "Mahalo Answers" and the point of it, as explained by @jasoncalacanis's from his blog, is as follows - "Mahalo Answers is a Knowledge exchange where you can post questions which are answered by other users"
I think the issue comes from not understanding how an "open thread" fits into the explination of the site from it's own CEO. Why can't an open thread simply be changed to a question instead? It doesn't have to be a specific question really but something such as "11 year old kidnapped in 1991 shows up at police station, what are your thoughts?"
This gives new users the visual understanding that we are a Q&A site and NOT a forum (even if these kind of questions result in more of a forum feel)

Really? I can think of about a dozen questions off the top of my head that likely wouldn't be offensive.
Any word on where Jayce Lee Dugard has been?
How often are kidnapping victims found alive 10 years or more after the abduction?
Did you have an emotional reaction to the story about J.L.D.?
What were the specifics on the abduction of J.L.D. back in 1991?
What city/state has J.L.D. been living in?
Are the police sure yet that it's really J.L.D.?
Have there ever been any kidnapping stories similar to what happened to J.L.D.?
....etc.
Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the Open Thread either. My opinion is that guiding this discussion with specific questions can make for more thoughtful discussions and answers. Just my opinion.

Please understand that at the time I wrote the page on this girl, her identity had not yet been confirmed. I really wanted to provide an open forum for this topic, a place where the community could discuss the story as it progressed throughout the day.
GNO, you have excellent questions. When an open forum is available, this is a great place to pose and answer these questions...and carry on a respectful and intelligent discussion.
Several members have been vocal about their opposition to open thread questions. we see that and have taken it into consideration. Let's agree to disagree, as arguing with other members is not what MA is about either. Please skip over open threads if they do not appeal to you, and spend that time and energy answering other questions on the site or coming up with more specific questions you'd like to find an answer to.
Some folks are going to really enjoy a good open thread from time to time, and some will not be interested. Our hope is that folks will move on to the next question/thread if they are not interested.
For example, I might very much want to participate in an open thread about the film The Hurt Locker while not having specific questions... you might not.
In Mahalo Answers 2.0 there will be the ability to customize your homepage and hopefully that will allow folks to bypass things they don't care for more easily. also, you'll be able to delete specific things from your homepage (i.e. this story).
in the mean time, let's be open minded to trying a lot of different things
I have to respectfully agree with @joyannj on this one. It's a fascinating story worth discussing, but out of respect for those involved, asking a specific question may come off as offensive.
This is an open forum to discuss the topic/story.
