What would cause a UPS plane to off-load packages back at their origin?
My package shipped yesterday at 10am Eastern. I thought it was on the plane to Alaska, but today at 10am the status updated to say "the airplane off-loaded packages" at their origin - Shanghai, CN.
What would cause UPS to do this, and how long of a delay is typical because of this?

The most likely cause for this would be a weight issue. Depending on how you package was shipped, it might have been removed from the plane because it was lowest on the "priority list" when they were overweight.

The delay is usually no longer than a day. The cause could be anything from a problem with the plane to a customs check. Unfortunately there is no way of telling why the packages were off loaded. This is a common problem with delivers from China. You don't happen to be waiting on something from Lenovo do you?
It is a computer, but not a Lenovo — It's a Mac.
I was close lol.
I used to be in charge of ordering pcs for a company that I worked for a while back and they were lenovos and almost all experienced some sort of shipping problem. Seeing as Lenovo and Apple have moved their manufacturing to China issues with the shipping will unfortunately be a problem. And unfortunately UPS and other shippers will not be able to tell you why the package was off loaded. It's horrible but on the bright side like I said earlier, the delay is normally no longer than a day and once it leaves china there are no problems.

Apple issued a stop on delivery last Wednesday for all of it's products to keep pre-ordered iPhone 3GS models from arriving early, this has caused issues with the shipping of all Apple products. Others are reporting having their, non iPhone, Apple products being held in various major cities in China or Anchorage Alaska, the average delay on shipping for most Apple products in now a 1 to 2 day delay.

Not doubting you, but citing a source for the information regarding Apple (i.e. news article, etc.) would be helpful and add credibility to your answer.
Here's a article from TechCrunch about Apple delaying iPhones last week:

trouble with the plane. possibly engine.
