I would suggest a gift card to her favorite clothing store. You can't go wrong with that and it's not a big birthday like turning 30 or 40 and women love to shop. That way when she does hit 40 you can build up to give her the best gift. For now though don't try too hard, save that for the 40th.

I suggest you sending you the money you are planning on buying something and you can tell her to buy the thing she wants. That would make her happy as she gets what she expects with your money.

If she's a successful woman she might have whatever you might get her, so how about something like a gift certificate to www.kiva.org where she can loan the money to someone in the third world to help them work themselves out of poverty.

When the loan is paid back, she can loan to someone else or withdraw the money.

Its what I did last year when my brother gave me some money, and everyone has always paid back fully, which is great as you can then help someone else with that money.
