I believe three things work the best. Time, distance, and distractions. It takes time to get over people. But it does work. Every day is just a little bit easier.
Distance: This is maybe the most important one. If at all possible, don't talk to the person or hang out with them. That just draws out the amount of time that it will take to get over them. If you feel one way and the other person doesn't feel that way, hanging out with them "as friends" is not going to help matters.
Distractions are very important as well. Hang out with other friends, and do things to take your mind off the person. And when you eventually find someone else, that goes a LONG way to getting over the person.
It's really easy to sit at home alone and be depressed, or to hang out with that person again. But this only makes things worse. If you go out and have fun with other people on a consistent basis, that will really help to move your life forward.

I think there has to be a mourning period. It's inevitable to have some sadness. I've recommended clients create some kind of ritual or ceremony. Sometimes writing down the person's name or the memories and then burying them. Something that represents letting go of the relationship - the good and the bad parts. You might also want to think about how it's a "good" thing that you aren't together. If you can't have them, there IS a reason. And the reasons are many and are good lessons to learn. Which leads me to...
I then suggest making a list of the things you've learned about yourself that you'll be able to apply to your next relationship.
I always try to focus on the "now" and the future. You can't change the past, you can only learn from it.
