I have a decent sized list. Some I go to daily, othersI'll be obsessed with for a few days, forget about for a month, and then remember about it only to become obsessed again.

1. http://www.digg.com . I used to sign in every day and actively discuss questions and digg or bury things. I still visit the site almost daily or more, but I haven't signed in in weeks. No need. The only time I sign in is if I have a particular point to discuss or someone to add for later. Who knows, maybe it'll come back around. I like it because it's always full of interesting and new content.

2. http://www.fmylife.com . This is a relatively new one that you might not have heard of yet, but it's basically exploded into popularity since it started. I don't actually have an account but I visit it daily and read the comments. I'm sure submission in the future will compel me to make an account. I stay because it's a solid source of humor, however, it has it's good days and it's bad days as far as content.

3. http://www.facebook.com . This is a given. All my friends use it constantly, so it's a great way to keep in touch. The number of my friends without facebook could likely be counted on one hand.

4. Another answers site.. . Similar to mahalo answers, minus the comments and the tips. I used this non-stop for a year before I found Mahalo and obtained the highest level possible, so it's sort of hard to stop. I have a lot of friends on the site I'm loyal to, so I still go back to answer their questions. I'm trying to make the switch gradually. I find Mahalo is a lot more serious and the other is much more immature, so I go there for my stupid questions like "What should I have for Lunch" or "Which shirt do you like better". I find those aren't things that belong here. Also, I go there when I need a quick answer. Because of the sheer volume of users there, all your answers come in within 5 minutes, where as here they come in pretty evenly over 2 or 3 days. Also, with the more immature users there, there are a lot of questions like "Am I pregnant" coming from 14 year olds who are clearly misinformed. Those just don't exist here - yet.

I have plenty more that I've used in the past, like myspace, that I just don't use any more. I can't even think of others specifically at the moment but there have been tons. I DONT do twitter.. yet. I find facebook takes care of just about everything I need, and none of my friends use twitter.. so what reason do I have to switch over?

Thanks !

I don't visit many online communities, because so many of them are just annoying. If I want to watch a bunch of people be keyboard commando Internet tough guys, I can...wait...I don't want to watch that, or be part of it.

One exception is the 2+2 poker forum. I enjoy hanging out there because, even though plenty of in fights and insults go around, they don't often involve the entire forum. I can easily stick to the strategy forums, where things are tamer.

MacHeist - good intelligent community, and every year they give away lots of Mac software before selling a heavily discounted bundle.

So, like, there are other online communities? I have heard of this. One, I was not crazy about joining because I didn't want to have to revel my face in their book. And another one, I understand that you have to share your personal space with everyone? My house is not that big. Besides, I have this Mahalo, bookmarked.

Thank you. I just don't think about that kind of stuff, so details really help my cognitive thinking. Yes, as a matter of fact. I have registered at kindleboard and mobilereader, and some obscure boards that have my book listed. I never think about them being social networks but they are.

I tried to avoid calling them "social networks" for that reason, and just talked about communities. Anywhere that you hang out and talk with other regulars! :)

Thanks for the extra info!

Twitter, because I can control the information I want to see, so if I find it useful I can keep following them and if the info gets to be more useless then useful I can stop following them. I use to be apart of facebook but there is to much "Garbage" on facebook. In my opinion facebook and myspace have become the same thing, and there aren't a lot of good online communities anymore. Another one I heard is good is Leoville when the tech guy is on KFI during the weekend.

Twitter - it makes for a nice little stream of information to run along-side your work.
Facebook - only because everyone uses it like it's the best thing ever.
Hacker News - it has very interesting content and an awesome community discussing startups.
Hunch - for some reason I am absolutely addicted to this service…
Delicious - not really a community site, but it's an awesome place to discover the best links on a particular subject based on crowd-sourced bookmarks.

Occasionally I go around and answer some questions on Get Satisfaction, as well. :)

I used to frequent friendster. Not sure if you know what it is. It is hugely dominated by Asians though. Until facebook came up, then it was facebook all the way. If you are talking about forums, I like visiting forum.hardwarezone.com. It just got a lot of general stuff like tech stuff, gossip, chit chat, love, marketplace ( for people to sell and buy stuff to and from each other) and more. Try that out and see if you like it haha.
