Your systems connected to the switch that are gigabit-capable will speak to each other at 1000MBit/s but will negotiate down to 100MBit/s (or 10MBit/s if the device doesn't do 100) when communicating with your DSL modem/router or any other equipment that is not gigabit-capable.
The exception to this truth would be if your systems or switch is configured to ONLY communicate at a certain speed and not set to auto-negotiate. However, the default setting is always to auto-negotiate so I wouldn't worry about it. It's worth mentioning though.

My DSL modem is also a b/g/10/100 router. Will a gigabit switch hooked to the uplink work for gigabit capable and still access dsl modem?
