Most blogging platforms allow you to place a "read more" link in your post. What you can do then is create your entire post, all research and fact included. At the top of the post, put your short pithy statements and positions, followed by the "read more" link. When it appears on your blog front page, it will show the intro, and if people want to see the whole thing, they can click the "read more" link.
The verbage of that link varies among blog platforms. Check yor platform documentation for further details.

How to link blog to a bulletin board of longer essays?
The blogsite is for short, pithy statements or positions. If I'd like people to be able to link to longer essays or articles I've done with research and more detail, is there a way to have "bulletin board" link (to the blog where longer pieces can be posted for people to read if they choose?

Another option if your articles are really meaty is to store them as PDFs, either within your blog upload area or elsewhere, and then just include a link to the PDF in your short blog post.
