How do I send files to my buddy easily?

I use primarily Yahoo Messenger, for chat, for photo sharing and for sending files. All my friends don't use AIM or MSN, they use Yahoo Messenger. I want to use webmessenger instead, and use something different for sending files. I don't want to send files via mail (it's not realtime), I don't want set up a FTP server (too complicated for others to set up), I don't want to use Apache (I want to leave this for developing only), I don't want to use pipebytes (it's running slow in here, and doesn't work well with my buddy).

Basically I want a file transfer mechanism replacement for Yahoo Messenger, for me and my buddies. A very fast IP to IP solution would be excellent.

I don't want lists of links, I don't want 1000 alternatives, I want something that just works for me and my buddies. I will select a best answer personally or I'll select "no best answer" if the solutions are poor quality ones, so take these things in consideration when you reply. I will provide feedback.

I have actually heard good things about Simple Socket... since it uses TCP connections it should be extremely quick and from what I can tell should be simple to set up.

Disclaimer: I have never had the need to use this program as I use my own web host to set up files for people that need them but I have heard positive things about this program and it is freeware (if it works well and you use it I do hope you would consider donating to the creator)

Is good for small and medium sized files. You can just shoot your friends a link and then they can download it.

2)
However, I suspect that you're talking about larger files. Audio and Video are usually pretty big.

In this case, I would suggest that you create private torrents and share the links with your friends. Not only will the transfers be quicker because you'll all be sharing the transfer load, but they'll be reliable as well.

Here are some easy instructions:
http://torrentfreak.com/how-to-create-a-torrent/

3)
If you're dead set on an IM replacement that handles file transfers well, Spark works well: http://www.igniterealtime.org/projects/spark/

Spark focuses on being easy to use and setting up a direct peer-to-peer connection for file transfers rather than relaying through a server.

I hope that this helps you out Bugsy

1. Dropsend would work, but it uses email. Dropsend would be excellent if the other buddy installed it and if I could send the file IP to IP (or at least I should give him a link).

2. I know how to create a private torrent, I use utorrent for that, but it's not a quick process.

3. Spark won't do, I want to use webmessenger and another thing for file transfers.

With dropsend, all you really need is the URL. While it would involve an extra step, you could send the dropsend email to yourself and IM the URL to that file around.

Other alternatives that will work in this scenario are:
http://www.megaupload.com/
http://www.yousendit.com/
http://www.sendthisfile.com/

I would advise DropBox. A project leader I know sends his databases and files using it. It's free and reasonably straightforward.

If you're looking for an easy way to send files- particularly large files- then I would try sendspace.com. My family and I use this site to send files to each other. It's a great option if you like to send pictures.

The basic service on sendspace is free, it's called sendspace Lite. Once you have signed up, sendspace has different guides to show you how to use the site. It's very easy to use, and especially convenient for sending those large files you can't send in emails.
