Best web host for individuals /professionals? Do we have real opportunity today with a selection?

Wondering who may be the top web host providers (hoping there is more than just 1?) for the individual or professional wanting to grow their home business -- and how much does it cost?

I'm seeking non-promoted answers from individuals based on personal experience.

For the last 3 years, I have used Dreamhost, 1and1.com, and HostGator -- I'm sure there are others.

Anyone use GreenhostNet http://www.greenhostnet.com/

or Bluehost http://www.bluehost.com/

or Super Green Hosting http://www.supergreenhosting.com/

I have experienced zero downtime with 1and1.com, however they happen to be the most expensive in comparison to bluehost or dreamhost - dreamhost appears to have best rates, but they have so much downtime i'm not sure if it's worth that headache anymore?

I would also like to hear if you have experience with their hosting panel - if it was good, bad, or indifferent.

Thanks

Dreamhost is by far the best from a small business perspective. I have used it for more than 3 years and I have only awe for the same. I also use hostgator and have used bluehost, but Dreamhost gives the most value for money for a site that only have content pages like blogs, and I have seen it support upto 10K pageviews.

I have had minimal downtimes, but if you are facing more downtimes, they will happily oblige if you ask for migrating to another server. They will move you onto another server.

I am currently hosting all of my websites with godaddy. They're really great, I have no complaints. Their domain name hosting service is great and I'd definitely recommend it even if you're not using their web hosting.

Yes, GoDaddy was good to me as well - but something happened in their panel which made things quite difficult to manage a "hosting" account for me, which is why i'm posing the question here.

Thanks for the answer Betzster

I have used most of the hosting companies you have listed. But by far dreamhost has provided me with besyt bang for the buck. If you go with the amount of bandwidth given per month at their prices, it was who i have settled with for me and my clients.

Thanks for the answer - Have you been with Dreamhost for longer than a year? Just wondering what your thoughts on stability were.

Yes, around two years. I am a web designer and have used them all. I have found that the support and just the sheer amount of disk space and bandwidth is really good. I have around 115 clients sites on dreamhost. Hostgator was the worst . bluehost was alright. But I have been exclusively using dreamhost for quite a while now. And it is on debian linux, a plus in my book.

You might want to check out similar questions have been asked here before, including by me:

If you use the search function, you'll find more specific questions too, about best Django host, hosts for Wordpress etc.

I've used A Small Orange, and like them. One nice thing is that for a small site that doesn't get too much traffic - your online CV maybe - they have some very cheap plans that give you lots of functionality, just with limited bandwidth and disk space.

They use the cpanel interface which is pretty common on a lot of hosts, and which I'm pretty happy with.
