I'm using Zimbra as an exchange alternative, but not with Thunderbird and Lightning. However, I can provide you with some info regarding Zimbra.
I use the Zimbra Desktop and web client, and it works very well. I've used Thunderbird and Outlook in the past, the Zimbra client works as well or better than either one of these. However, if you want to use Thunderbird and Lightning, here maybe some helpful URL's

It appears as though this is not an easy setup, and it also doesn't look like it works completely "integrated". Several people posted some work arounds, but I'm not sure that's what you want. I think it will also depend on whether you host it yourself, or having someone host it for you.
The Windows Mobile seems to depend a lot on which device you're using to sync, as well as which version of Windows Mobile. It does work, and natively with the latest version (ZCS 5.0) of Zimbra. For more info on that see this link

I've switched to Blackberry, and that works very well.
I'll include the URL's to Zimbra's forum and wiki, just in case you haven't found any other useful info. Good luck with this!

Anybody using either Scalix or Zimbra as an Exchange alternative, sync'ing with Thunderbird and Lightning, and Windows Mobile?
and if so, what's the best way to go about deploying a Scalix/Zimbra mailbox?
i only need a single mailbox (1 user), and am most concerned with sync'ing my contacts and mail with Thunderbird, and calendar via Lightning.
thanks in advance!

i combed through the wikis and did all kinds of research; i found a company based out of Chicago, 01.com (http://www.01.com) that offers individual Zimbra accounts, and their customer service was phenomenal.
i should also mention MX Toolbox (http://www.mxtoolbox.com), based out of Austin, who seemed like a stellar outfit for small business (5+ licenses) - i'm including both links for posterity, as both outfits were a great help and full of information.
and excelsior, i've got everything humming -
Thunderbird ... check.
Lightning ... check.
Contacts ... check
Windows Mobile phone ... check.
excellent help, once again, and thanks!
