Here's a photo I took at Rendezvous Days in 2009:

The portion of the Voyageurs Route I want to paddle and portage is about 231 miles. It would take about a month to do comfortably--a month of lakes and loons and lots of beauty and relaxation.

M$I recently watched a great show on PBS about all the museums of Cuba, and was enthralled. I found the entire show on Youtube, so if you have some time to set aside... I know you'll enjoy this treat. (there are over 50 museums!)

Another show that had me falling head over heels is Nature on PBS. There have been at least two The Jewel of the Caribbean and The Accidental Eden. I highly recommend seeing both. Here's a preview of the first one!

Just the fact that this place is overflowing with great art, history, nature and people makes me want it more than any other destination. I've been looking at ways of traveling there... but I couldn't find any website that really explained the rules in black and white. Maybe the fact that it's hard to get to, makes it all the more appetizing!

M$Thanks for the great Museum program Ms Bunny!
I'm going to watch it later.
Cuba is a place on my Bucket list too, I've wanted to travel there for a long long time...I just always thought the US would change its travel policy before now.
I know... I thought it would be easier to travel there too. You'll love that Museum show. They have a museum for cigars and chocolate. I quit smoking years ago, but if I were in Cuba, I'd try a cigar! (I have always loved the way cigars smell)
There's also a museum for Hemingway in a house that owned while living there. That show really give you a new appreciation for the place.

M$Hi, You can't go wrong going to N.Z. It is a wonderful, beautiful country(I know, as I was born there) Both Islands are a must to see, You need to take your time to see everything, as being so far away, you might only have the one chance to go there:)) If you do go, make a good schedule, and fit as much in as possible, as there is just so much to see and do!The people are warm and friendly, and try to visit some farms when you are in the South Island.
There are a few reasons. First, my husband and I are Buddhist, and there are some places in Kyoto significant to the Buddhist faith that we would really love to visit. Kyoto is sometimes referred to as the city of a thousand temples, but in reality there are more than 1500. Because we are Zen Buddhists, we're particularly interested in Nanzenji Temple and the Ryoanji Zen gardens, and I think we'd like to stay at the Shunkoin Temple for a retreat.
Secondly, I've always been fascinated by the history of the geisha. I've devoured as many books on the subject as I could find, and used to collect kanzashi (geisha hair ornaments) and geta (sandals) which I wore of course with my collection of tabi (split toed socks). I never could afford nice kimonos, though (which is just as well, as I lost my whole collection when our house burned down a few years ago!). Anyway, the primary geisha district is in Kyoto, and I would give anything to visit the guest houses and interact with and possibly even learn from some of the maiko and geiko, though of course as a tourist that's extremely unlikely. The closest I'd probably get is a tour of the district, but you never know.
I may have to include a side trip to see the hanging gardens in Osaka, as well!

Very cool.
No I don't personally know them but my niece sure does.
Bruce and Sue are her in-laws
My older sister and her husband use to spend their summers working at the lodge, up until just a few years ago.
My dad got their horseback riding activities all squared away for them back in the late 90s.
Miranda Kerfoot is my neice, her and Robert moved down here to Missouri...hmmm about 1/2 dozen years ago.
Small world isn't it? :-)
Very! That's really cool.
Outstanding!

I've got family north of Grand Marais...up on Gunflint lake.
Beautiful country.
If you get a chance you might enjoy this book
Justine Kerfoot was an amazing Lady
Yep, I've read that! I stay at Gunflint Lodge when I go up there (do you know Bonnie and Cheryl?). I rent the boat from them and use their shuttle service, usually at the beginning of the trip and then end up back at Gunflint Lodge, on their beach, at the end. Gunflint Lake is gorgeous! And long! Last time I was up there, we had to paddle like crazy against the wind across nearly the whole lake to get back to the lodge. I love it!
It's awesome that this big blue planet is really smaller than we think. What time of year to they make this journey? Is there snow on the ground? I'd be there in a heart beat if I had a month to spare! :)
Hey, Bunny...
To me, the best time of year for this kind of trip is late August, before it gets "too cold" and when the mosquitoes aren't feeding with a vengeance (although, they're still around). I'd love to go up there in the winter sometime. What a different world it is then, when you can snowshoe and ski across the lakes instead of paddle.
Your answer about Cuba is really interesting, by the way. What a cool choice.
Your O-so right Ms Bunny that this big blue ball is alot smaller then we often times believe.
I agree that late summer is a good time to enjoy the Boundary Waters.
Winter time has its own attractions, although I prefer warmer clims in my old age now.
Here's what they up to along the Gunflint trail this month.
It is a beautiful place. Just don't go up during August. It's loaded with people.
August is honestly my favorite time to go. I did a week-long canoe-camping trip in August, 2009, and the four of us on the trip only saw other humans on the first day. The permit system in the BWCA allows only a certain, small number of people from each put-in each day, so it keeps people spread out and eliminates crowding, not to mention making sure there are camping spots for everyone. I also like to go in August because that's when Rendezvous Days is in Grand Portage. I just haven't had any experience with crowding up there. I guess it just depends on where you go.
