On the TV series "Dexter" (set in Miami) why do the cars have front license plates? (Florida only issues rear tags.)
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The cars used in production are registered in California and because of this, they have front and back plates. The plates are covered with mock Florida plates. It would be a real pain to continuously remove the front plate for Dexter shoots and then put the plate back on to be California street legal.

M$I pick those things up a lot though when watching tv and movies. Sometimes the actors/actresses will be in the same scene but you can tell it was shot at two different times because part of their wardrobe will be different, as in accessories---belts/shoes/jewelry. Also, sometimes their hair and makeup aren't even the same.............come on! Is it that hard to keep it straight---isn't that what all the producers/directors/wardrobe/make-up and hair artists/even assistants are for??? I'd like to get a job like that and not have to pay attention to details....ohhhh only in a fantasy world!

M$But as to your question, TV can't even get the news right much of the time, why would they get fiction "right"?
Also, it turns out that except for a few early episode scenes the series has been shot in southern California, which requires two license plates.

Hmm, if I drove my car (registered in florida) to LA and drove around... I would not get a ticket for not having a front plate. Most cars here have a plate of some sort in the front position, usually an advertisement for the dealer they bought the car from or a club or sports team. I would guess that covering up the fron CA plate with one of those would be just as effective. (You really can't just take the front plate off, as the void in the sun fade / road grime would show.)
Also, driving a california car with fake florida plates is probably just as illegal as not having a fake florida plate on the front. (The again, most of the actors are impersonating the police with their badges and uniforms, probably also a crime, but understandable in a film / tv production environment.)
I didn't know that Dexter was shot in california. Seems that everything is cheaper in florida, I wonder why they wouldn't actually shoot in miami?
