I wonder why the Skipper never came up with a solution. While he wasn't the most agile of fellows, his experience on boats should have allowed him to figure out some solution.

Actually they tried to fix the boat a number of times, even building rafts but Gilligan kept ruining it. In one episode the glue they were using to repair the boat was so delicious that Gilligan tried to eat it.
And remember, when they did finally get off the island civilization was not as great as they remembered and they chose to be lost instead.
