On Gilligan's Island the Professor could make a radio out of a coconut, why couldn't he fix the hole in the boat?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The professor was book smart, but not street smart (or island smart in this case). He could create items he studied, such as a radio, but he couldn't go outside his scientific comfort zone to create a practical application to fix the boat. I personally believe he purposely focused on other projects that would keep them on the island longer since that meant more time with Ginger and Mary Ann. Where else could a nerdy scientist get so much attention?

I wonder why the Skipper never came up with a solution. While he wasn't the most agile of fellows, his experience on boats should have allowed him to figure out some solution.

Actually they tried to fix the boat a number of times, even building rafts but Gilligan kept ruining it. In one episode the glue they were using to repair the boat was so delicious that Gilligan tried to eat it.

And remember, when they did finally get off the island civilization was not as great as they remembered and they chose to be lost instead.

Because he was a scientist, not a shipbuilder. ;)
