Olympics coming in 2010 to Vancouver. Been having commercials for them running for months already. What's with this obsession with sports?

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Sports is one thing, but the Olympics have become more of a political event than a sporting event.

Look at Beijing last year, how much controversy and attention the games brought to that country. No one cared who got the Bronze Medal in synchronized swimming, but people were awed by the stadiums and opening ceremony. The Olympics were a way for China to announce that they are a first-world power and stole tremendous attention through the Olympics.

This is why Vancouver is promoting them so much. Not to sell tickets to ice fishing (though that's part of it), but because this is a political event for all of Canada, just as Calgary was in the 80s.
