Dan Rooney has been working on projects relating to Ireland for more than 30 years.
He co-founded and is currently vice-chairman of the American Ireland Fund in 1976. According to their website, the fund promotes four goals: peace and reconciliation, arts and culture, community development, and education. (http://www.irlfunds.org/aif/)
