OK Science: Why do bad smells or burnt smells (garbage, burnt popcorn, vomit) cause headaches?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Hi, Great question. In fact any strong odor GOOD or BAD can 'trigger' a headache, if you are one of those lucky people who are sensitive to this kind of environmental stimulus.

In an article, by AOL Health, strong aromas are one of the top 10 triggers for headaches. See the other typical causes in the article here: http://www.aolhealth.com/condition-center/headaches-migraines/causes-surprising

So, for those people who may suffer from frequent (or also migraine type headaches, which are different than typical headaches) - it's really valuable to identify any specific odors that might be your own individual culprits. For me - I cannot go into one of those 'Yankee' Candle shops - very nice place - but way too pungent. Strong perfume is dangerous for me also, I have to get to an open window for some fresh air fast :)

Why it hurts: Strong odors may activate the nose's nerve cells, which stimulate the nerve system associated with head pain.
