OK PC's
I need a decent search application to find files on a Vista machine and the network it is connected to.
They crippled the search feature in XP but it will at least find files by name or date range. In Vista the search interface is unfathomable. Even if you can figure it out, it will not find anything. I have even seeded files in the search path to see if it can find them. It never does.
I need something that will run under Vista and find files by name, date range and file contents ( regardless of file extension )
I am NOT looking for instructions on how to use the Vista search. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt.
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

There is also the Gaviri Universal SearchOS, which is not free, but there is a free trial. It searches across networks, and mobile devices.

M$It catalogues CDs, DVDs, and Network shares and is quick on the find. The major issue is that it's € 29. If the google desktop search won't do what you want it to try CD Winder. I'm a big fan of it and it is worth the money.

M$I used it awhile back in XP when it still had a free version and found it to be pretty robust, though it was slow on the machine I used it on due to heavy fragmentation of the hard drive.
They've probably improved it greatly since then and they do offer a 30 day trial. It might be more heavy-duty than what you're looking for (some features require an installation on a server) but it's worth a shot.

I am not pleased with Google Desktop.
After 4 days it is only 16% finished indexing, It did find files but they were displayed in the same format as the google search engine web search.
I want a simple list, like a directory listing that tells me where the file is and the size and the date modified.
The best answer was agentransack.exe from http://filelocatorpro.coom
I am asking Mahalo to award the tip to the user who sent that answer.
