Offended by a $25 gift coupon to Six Flags?

A good friend of mine received a $25 gift coupon to Six Flags on his birthday last week, and he was really annoyed about it. He goes to Six Flags at least once a year, so I didn't think the gift was such a terrible idea, but are there people who feel that coupons make for bad gifts?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Well coupon implies that it was free. So if someone gave him something they got free as the only gift they gave and probably wouldn't have used it themselves, then yes, it seems like a slightly insulting gift. It's basically like saying "I don't want this and I got it free. Oh, it's your birthday? Well there's your present."

If the coupon was accompanied by a gift certificate to Six Flags (basically making the gift certificate worth more because of the coupon discount), then giving a coupon isn't insulting. I've given my mom a spa gift certificate before and also printed a coupon from the spa so she can get more services with it and included it in the card.

It depends on who you talk to, but typically speaking, yes many people find coupons to be almost hurtful gifts. See, when someone receives a coupon as a gift, not only do they take it as an insult, but some have gone as far as to end friendships over such things. Keep in mind, unless you give the coupon along with another, more meaningful gift (other than a card), odds are offense will be taken. Unfortunately, even giving a coupon as a gift with the best intentions can backfire in an instant. Yes, it is sad, but also very true. So, just remember that if it is a gift idea you may have, it is way more likely to go over well if it is given on top of something else.
