Illegal? NO WAY! In fact, hypnosis has been widely used in sports to improve performance.
In second fact, you naturally go into a hypnotic state when you play sports. It's called "Getting in the 'zone'".
I think you might have a misconception of what hypnosis is...

Would it be illegal to hypnotize oneself before a sports game so that one could play better?

I was thinking of a type of hypnosis to help focus someone's mind and to help eliminate distraction. I thought that was an actual type of hypnosis.

That is an "application" of the hypnotic state... I wouldn't call it a "type of hypnosis".
