Based on my experiences, the jinx caller always decides which jinx system to use, usually based on personal preference. Usually, I say, "Jinx. 10. You owe me a coke." I skip counting to ten for a better chance of getting the coke, however, they rarely pay up. I like having a reward for jinxing them, like the coke. Making them stay silent is not as entertaining because they can break it easily. But with the coke, you can keep hastling them until they give it to you. It's a fun game and can change topics pretty smoothly, which makes for a decent, seamless conversation.

Also, they nearly always ended up speaking, allowing me to jinx them... (usually by some painful method, such as a dead arm, but i usually ended up getting jinxed most of the time it happened. :-) )

Which "jinx" system do you prefer?
And what are the rules? Does someone "owe you a Coke"? Or does the person have to stay silent until someone says their name?
And is it the "jinx caller" who determines which jinx system to use? Break it down for me and let me know how you and yours handle copycat speech?

• I learned something new from your answer - the part about counting to ten! Thanks! Wish I could give you a Coke!

When i was younger, I personally preferred the person to stay silent until somebody said their name, as it annoyed them to no end.. Also, they nearly always ended up speaking, allowing me to jinx them... (usually by some painful method, such as a dead arm, but i usually ended up getting jinxed most of the time it happened. :-) )

Throughout my childhood, we always said "Jinx joke ya owe me a coke." Then, the other person would be responsible for getting you a coke (which, in the South, means ANY type of soft drink). However, I don't remember ever actually getting a coke from a jinx call. It was something we only said and did not act upon. I have never even heard of this "staying silent" nonsense!

Yep, did you ever hear of the "shoulder pounding" variation in which you slug someone in the arm for jinxing? You'd better be the first one to call the jinx or you'll have one bruised shoulder!
....I was never a big fan of this version....

That sounds vaguely familiar! But maybe I am thinking of "slug bug."
