I find a new interest. I'm perpetually curious about things, so I think of something I've wondered about, and go off to research it. For example, I just read that copper in the diet can keep the pigment from leaving your hair, so I'm off to figure out what foods have it and how I can work it into my diet. That will keep be busy for awhile.
I also have a list of authors I follow. I can either go to their websites (all 50 some of them), or I can read some reviews of their works, where commentors often will mention similar authors. I've found some of my favorite authors that way.
Then there's always the old standby of calling real, live people. Who in your life would you like to reconnect with? For some reason, New Years Day is often the time to do that.

Find a cool used book store and independent video store near you (or, if you live somewhere without such amenities, browse Amazon and join Netflix) and really start to dig into their selections.
Once you start to watch a lot of old movies or foreign movies, for example, you'll realize that there are literally thousands of interesting things to watch you've never even heard of before. That should kill a few hours, days or even months.

Personally, when bored, I like to read or watch movies. You'd be surprised at the level of expertise you can build up on a subject like literature or film just by being an active, attentive reader or viewer. Find a cool used book store and independent video store near you (or, if you live somewhere without such amenities, browse Amazon and join Netflix) and really start to dig into their selections.

I'm PC oriented, so I like to find new games (game.giveawayoftheday.com) or other programs: giveawayoftheday.com to mess with. The game site only gives away games on the weekends. Good, clean, inexpensive fun.
