It's an addiciton but possibly not a dangerous one. :)
Not many addictions make you money, so that is a plus. However it could divert you from activities that could make you even more money, so possibly not as big of a plus as it first appears.
I think Mahalo Answers could be used as an alternative to methadone.
http://www.whitehousedrugpolicy.gov/publications/factsht/methadone/index.html
If all the drug addicts in the country were given free laptops, broadband, and a membership of Mahalo, I believe the war on drugs would be won in short order.
No one would be dealing on street corners, they'd all be home answering questions.
Also, all the billions that are made in the drug trade would be diverted to Mr Calacanis. (Have you considered that as a business model Jason? *takes out patent immediately*)
However as Mahalo Answers is still highly potent, it should be made a controlled substance.

Is this an addiction? No. I believe i have it under controll now, but I do get suckered into checking some of my answers multiple times since some of the questions people ask around here tend to turn to discussions.

Second, it's now 2:42am and I've just realised I've been here for about 2.5 hours... and I should probably go to bed.
On the plus side, i've made yellow belt and it's still my first day.

Sadly I caught the condition a while ago and have spent more time answering questions on Mahalo than revising for essential tests! I think there are many ways which make Mahalo so addictive:
It is competitive. Firstly, you want to get a black belt - so you have to work very hard answering and voting and getting best answers so you can achieve those important belt statuses. You also want to appear at the top of the "Top Members" - so you have to work hard to achieve that, whether it be asking questions or achieving the most "best answers". Members like @dcanswerer are extremely competitive - aiming to be in the Top Members section on the right sidebar.
Money. Yes, I know Mahalo isn't all about money - but a bit of change in your back pocket isn't too bad - and as well it is like rewarding you for the time you have put into the answer for the asker.
Its fun. If you don't think its fun, then why are you here? Personally, I love coming on and learning new things. Recently I have been a little turned off Mahalo Answers due to the mass amount of Twitter questions. I would very much like to see the quantity reduce - so that more quality answers can be seen.

It is not an addiction and I am NOT addicted.
I can quit any time I want to.
I mean, sure I visit the site like 50+ time a day just to check if someone answered my question ... or if somebody liked my snazzy answer to their question... but like I said, I can quit any time I want.
And I take MA breaks all the time. I go the bathroom, I eat lunch (most of the time without using my iPod Touch to check my MA page.. both bathroom and lunch) and sometimes I even go outdoors where I don't have wireless access. No. Really.
And that voodoo doll with the pins in my closet.. absolutely nothing to do with the time I got the mark for "unhelpful answer".
No problem here... please move along...

Is Mahalo Answers a dangerous addiction?
Do you have any personal experiences of your own addiction to Mahalo?

"checking your answers multiple times"... hmmm. Maybe I should branch out from addiction into obsessive compulsive disorders in the next discussion! (lol)

Yes, absolutely, if I'm away from Malaho Answers for too long I get twitchy and break out in a cold sweat, classic signs of addiction. Yesterday I spent an hour and a half answering 25 cent whatever happened to questions. http://images.clipartof.com/small/30477-Clipart-Illustration-Of-A-Smart-Little-Bunny-Rabbit-Sitting-And-Reading-A-Red-Book.jpg

Do you think you can sway me with a cute bunny picture?! (well... yeah)
I just think of the recession when I answer the 25 cent ones!

The terminology for being addicted to Mahalo Answers is called Mahalo Flu. (It's used countless times in the past!) It's definitely an addiction! But the only danger I can see (besides the usual ones of having carpal tunnel and becoming a chair tuber from sitting in front of a screen so long) is learning so much about everything that you discover you have a different calling than your current profession, and blow tens of thousands of dollars and years of education so you can become something else. Because of all the wonderful things you've learned here, so that you felt like you have a jump start on your new profession. That far-fetched scenario is the only thing I can figure out.

I don't think it is an addiction but I certainly make it a priority to check Mahalo every day, multiple times a day. I spend at least a half hour at a time on Mahalo looking at questions and answering them. I think it is a great site to have and I am glad that my husband made me join because I learn a lot from reading everyone's questions. I have even asked a few questions and got some great answers from other users. Thank you to the people who started Mahalo!
