(Qualifications: I have a black belt in Shotokan Karate)
What I learned and teach to students for a powerful punch:
- Use the earth to punch. Imagine that there is a connection running from earth to the heal of your foot, up your leg, up your back, into your arm and into your hand. ALL of these points are connected and you need them all for a powerful punch.
- Punch THROUGH your target. Don't imagine hitting your target. Imagine hitting a point three to four inches beyond your target.
- The smaller the area, the more energy. There's a reason in karate they teach you to hit with just the first two knuckles on your hand. If you hit with the entire fist, you distribute the energy over that area. If you reduce the size of the area connecting with the target, you put all that energy into that small size.
Those are a few tips... Oss..

1. Add power by having more power available.
In other words, build muscle to increase the impact of your punch.
This page lists some exercises that are supposed to help:

2. Putting more body weight into the punch will increase the power.
There is an optimal point (too much lunging will decrease the power, and not enough the same) where your body weight can effect the power of the punch.
A quote from my source:
"But, dropping your weight into the punch temporarily adds mass to the equation because you are borrowing the force of gravity."

Good answer sensei. Proof that personal experience usually trumps a pacifist with google.

As far as I can tell, there are two main factors: 1. Add power by having more power available.
In other words, build muscle to increase the impact of your punch.
