It was unreasonable to punish the deputies, especially under the circumstances. Police are not on duty 24 hours, even if they are always on call they can relax and have fun. They were at a restaurant which features pretty waitresses, and the owner said in an interview that customers posing with or photographing the waitresses is extremely common. Also, although I've never understood it, posing sexy gals on or beside cars is a standard cultural thing in the region. In Texas, so are guns. Apparently the excuse for punishment was that they used a police camera for the shot, but these days with digital cameras that doesn't use up any government resources other than a tiny bit of electricity. The deputies were not neglecting their duty, they were on a break during a training trip.

Wasn't the problem that the girl was holding their gun? Even though they are not on duty 24/7, they are responsible for their weapon 24/7. The girl was posing while holding the gun, which is a big no-no.

The local police were called because someone saw the girl with the gun. The sheriff fired one of the deputies because he was the one who handed her the gun. But the police did not charge anyone because there was no law broken. And the sheriff did not explain what regulation was broken. So I still think it was unreasonable to punish the deputies.
