The crushing defeat of the Republican party and the bad press they've been getting has caused a lot of backlash. I think of it this way: I have a wonderful dog, a white german shepherd. She is the sweetest dog in the world. But recently, I adopted a new dog. I brought him home, and my shepherd tried to kill him. I saw her barking furiously, showing her teeth and trying to rip his throat out. Maybe she was scared, maybe she just didn't want someone else on her terriroty.
Regardless, I see a similar reaction with this protest. The Republican party, like my shepherd, has had its day in the sun, generally pissing off the rest of the world with the kind of "We're richer, we have the best weapons, and we have Jesus on our side" attitude. But they are no longer the ruling party. And instead of my dog fighting back, it is my mother and brother, who have told me in the last few days that "Obama took the guns and ammunition out of Wal-Mart," "We can't trust this Muslim to lead us," and "We are going to the Tea Party to show that communist what we think."
Since Critical Thinking courses are basically non-existent in high school and not required in college, and political science courses are not part of high school curriculae (and there is no reason to take them in college unless you are obtaining a poly sci degree), most Americans do not have basic critical thinking skills, are strongly geocentric and ethnocentric, and are generally naive about the rest of the world. They've never had to speak another language except for recreation, and yet they will torment an Indian man over his accent and skin color who has worked his entire life to come to this country and do my job better than I ever could. They cannot identify basic fallacies and live their lives based on emotion, selfishness, and opportunism. The American Dream that Republicans sell is, "Work hard and you'll have anything you want." The truth is, for the majority of people, the American Dream is, "You can have nice stuff if you work hard enough and if you have really good luck, but you will be in debt for the rest of your life." We see rappers and athletes declaring bankruptcy, and it is these same people on countless celebrity worship TV shows that are beamed to the US citizens, encouraging them to believe that if they just work hard enough, they will become rich and be able to join in the unsustainable spending and under-accumulation of wealth.
Plainly, these people don't know how well they have it. We are the richest, most powerful, and most free nation in the world. We have low taxes compared to much of the world and enjoy similar benefits (aside from national health care). Ironically, we are also one of the unhealthiest and stupidest nations. Just look at Yahoo! Answers. Plainly, people that are not intelligent are easy prey for people that want to gain power by using scare tactics and religion. This is not to say there aren't good arguments against Obama's platforms. There are of course hyper-intelligent "Republicans" as there are hyper-intelligent "Democrats," but I think many of the people who helped Obama get elected, just as the many people that are protesting today simply go along with the herd, especially when there are cult figures like Boortz, Savage, O'Reilly, and Keyes telling them that Obama is a pinko communist who is personally buying all the guns in the world and planning to melt them down and make the largest bathhouse in the world before painting butterflies on our new solar-powered tanks, giving our soldiers daffodils and Pink Heart medals, and using our military to create a one world Communist government.
So I think say the majority of these people are protesting for the sake of protesting, because some talking head told them to do so, because they have nothing better to do, or because they are afraid and wounded. Maybe a few have poured over statistics and are genuinely concerned, but polls have shown that this is a deeply partisan protest. Regardless, as Obama said, “It’s a little hard for me to take criticism from folks about this recovery package after they presided over a doubling of the national debt. I’m not sure they have a lot of credibility when it comes to fiscal responsibility.”
I am just amazed that the left and right have change places in an important way - in the past, the Left has been characterized by blood and violence, by shouting in the streets, by holding idealism above realism. Now Republicans are in the street, Christians and people with Bill O'Reilly books are murdering left-wingers, and they are spouting bile and encouraging violent mania, and hoping to their God that Obama fails. Meanwhile, we liberals with our heads in the clouds are quietly going about our days, being "brainwashed" by the limp and understated NPR, and wondering what the hell the fuss is all about.
Boy, I am going to get some major flack for this post... ::sweats::

Obama tax cut is just one step. They want more to be done.
The demonstrations are part of a larger grass roots movement against government spending called Taxed Enough Already, or TEA -- giving name to the Tax Day Tea Parties -- and come more than 235 years after the original Boston Tea Party revolt against taxes.

Also, in regards to the comment about the 95% vs. 5% question. Just because something appears to "help" more people than it "hurts" doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. People can disagree with the principle behind the policy even if it appears to help them.
For example, we could tax 99% of the income tax from the top 3% of the earners. That would help 97% of the people! Don't agree? Well, stop complaining, it helps you doesn't it?
Comparisons to other countries are not what we should be striving for. We can do better.

The tea party thing is very inappropriate. The original Boston Tea Party was objecting to taxation without representation. Current taxes are all imposed by our elected representatives.

What are the Tea Party protesters, protesting?
http://www.flickr.com/photos/33749589@N07/3445638718/
From what I understand it's taxes? But as a non-American citizen I am confused, because from what I read is that Obama, still in the dawn of his presidency, has already passed one of the largest tax cuts in American history? One that helps 95% of Americans? Does this mean the other 5% are those protesting? Again I could be wrong with my assumption, I haven't really been following this in the news, so please enlighten me by answering below. Thanks!

They are voicing their opposition to high taxes and big government spending. Obama tax cut is just one step. They want more to be done.

Ah, interesting, I always under the impression that America was one of the least taxed 1st world countries. Is it that much of a problem now? Why are they protesting after the large tax cut, why didn't they protest prior?

Tea parties = poor people protesting rich people's taxes going up while poor people's taxes are going down. Doesn't make sense? Then yes, you read it correctly.

- Fact Refuted
Have you added up how much you pay in taxes lately- this is assuming you are American. I mean sure we pay into Social Security and Medicare but there's not guarantee that it will actually be there when we need it. According to the Government my family's income is bellow the poverty level- we pay about 22% of our income in some form of taxes.
I'm sorry, to me- that's worth protesting.

Yes, it's taxes. I only know this becuase I heard on the radion that "TEA" stands for Taxed Enough Already. And I'm 12, so I don't really understand all that stuff (and I'm glad that I don't have to, lol). As a foreigner, you don't need to understand it, do you? so why do you care? maybe I'm just being a kid, but I think people shouldn't worry about stuff that doesn't affect them. ~Sarah

They are protesting irresponsible government spending. Taxes might not need to be increased immediately, but eventually there are going to be consequences for this obscene deficit. Also, in regards to the comment about the 95% vs. 5% question. Just because something appears to "help" more people than it "hurts" doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. The protesters don't want to pay taxes. Taxes have always been an issue for right wingers. They just don't like them and keep trying to come up with simplistic solutions. The tea party thing is very inappropriate. The original Boston Tea Party was objecting to taxation without representation. Current taxes are all imposed by our elected representatives.

Um, no. Most right wingers aren't against taxes. They are against wasteful spending. Which was what these teaparties were about. They were not inappropriate. If that's what you are going to claim, then you have to also agree that every protest by a leftist is inappropriate.
Yes, we the people voted these men and women in, but that doesn't mean we have to agree with each and every decision they make - most especially when those decisions prove to be so horrendously bad for our country. It is our duty as citizens and constituents to tell our elected officials that this is not what we voted them into office to do.
And by the way, these teaparties weren't all right wingers. There are plenty of democrats and independents that don't agree with the spending of the current administration.

My opinion that the protest is inappropriate is based on the Tea Party analogy, not their right to protest in general. The original Tea Party was about taxation without representation. This protest is just about being outvoted. And that's just too bad.

You will get some flak, but it'll be from the nonthinking sheep you speak of. I've been torturing myself lately listening to some of the rightwing whackjob radio stations and the things they are stating, the misunderstandings they are spreading, the intentional misinterpretations they are perpetrating are downright scary and irresponsible. I can guarantee we'll be hearing about morons killing each other in the days ahead because of this.
let me enumerate....
1. Im an independant, I feel neither of the 2 major parties represent my views in the halls of congress(yes, little c, I refuse to capitolize for a bunch of self entitling drunkards)
2. I belive that in my state, which is 50th in per-capita in-come and 1st in per-capita tax burden, the leges continually spend our tax dollars on wasteful projects and the people refuse to throw the bums out.
(oooohh... bad rant here... just got interupted by (insert nationality here) telemarketer that could not speak my language clearly cursing me when I asked him ot remove me from his call list.... oooooooh... #frustration)
ok.. where was i...
3. I am a strict constructionalist. The Constitution (Capitol), was written by a bunch of people who wanted to form a gov't that would not alienate the people it was designed to govern. More and more people feel that the Constitution is a "living" document and open to interperetation, this is legalese for "we think there is a loophole here if we look hard enough," or "they really didnt mean this, its no longer relevant." Ahem:
"Amendment X - The powers not delegated to the United Stated by the Constition, nor prohibited by it to the stated, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people."
which means if it is not specifically in the Constitution, and for delegated to the federal gov't, it is therefore the power of the people, or the states. My governor is trying to refuse stimulus money because of the Quid Pro Quo (ooh, somebody knows latin) attached to the funds, and the administration has told the STATE legislatures to overide any gov that defies him... Is my governor not the duly elected Chief Executive of my state? These funds come with strings attached to programs that by law must continue to be funded by the state when the federal money runs out in 3 years, if you take the money, you gotta keep the programs.
4. Yes, the second amendment does mean that people can own guns, it was essential to the framers that the people be able to forcibly overthrow the government should it overstep its bounds, we are talking about a bunch of paranoid men who had just fought a war (that started over a $.01 tax! among other things) against a gov't that tried to disarm the people, and yes, that means military arms for civilians (no nukes, but i wouldnt mind a good m1a1 abrams) (the US gov't paid fees to civilians during the war of 1812 for the use of their "privately owned" cannons, cannon balls, and powder, even their ships)
5. 1st amendment means what it says, not that no-one can practice religion, but that gov't cant stop you from practicing religion, and that it cant single one out for special priveliges (i.e. Church of England and lets say, England!)
6. I only make $65k a year, Im tired of 1/3 of it dissapearing to fedaral and state taxes, not to mention sales and property and sales taxes. I want a little better use of the money that they already take from me, in fact I want them to take less from me. I didnt graduate from college, but i did go for several years, I had some wonderful experiences there, but the real world set in and I had to make a living. Life is hard, in order to make ends meet, hard decisions have to be made about finances and expenditures, our gov't is doing neither, under the previous and current administrations, we are hemmhoraging money faster than the fed can print or borrow it. I think the GAO puts the figure at $30k in tax liability for every person born this year, before they are even in the system, thats not good.
People are mad. Period. Washington and most of the media are ignoring what the people want. 15% of the people and special interests/PACs/lobbyists control what is going on in the halls of (c)ongress. The president promised there would be no earmarks in any bill of his congress, yet the stimulus bill contained 9000 earmarks, he promised that no bill would be rushed through without 7 days lead time for the people to read what was being passed, yet the same bill was pushed through in its final form with less thatn 30 hours of lead time.
That is why people were having tea parties. That is why people are angry. That is why what you seem to think are a bunch of inbred redneck hick savages left their homes, jobs, businesses, and schools to let their voices be heard, to let the gov't know that we are not all a bunch of sheep that can be led by a judas goat (do you know what a judas goat is? google it, its interesting..... if you ever lived on a farm in the real world, you would), The people have a voice, and no, that doesnt mean we are bitter because we lost, as i said before, G.W. Bush did as much to hurt us as Obama is doing now. When the media picked the candidates, we all lost. Instead of letting the people choose which ones they wanted, they force fed us 2 losers, and we got shafted with the winner. Im not a racist, I dont agree with President Obama's policies, if Hillary Clinton were to do the same thing, I would be just as (oooh ooooh ooh 2004 word of the year!) dis-enfranchised.
My $0.02
