1) Like doctor/patient and supervisor/subordinate relationships, one member has a definitive upper hand in the affair. This appeals to both male teachers who had difficulty attaining a controlling relationship with someone he found attractive, and female teachers who are immersed in a world of typically taking a subordinate role, and are now liberated to be in charge.

2) Physical beauty attracts power/money. One of the key elements of physical attractiveness is youth, therefore the teacher is attracted to the student. From the other side, the student will see the attraction as having power and influence over something powerful.

3) There is a great social pressure to have sex, both the teacher and the student experience this. Another strong social pressure is to break rules and get away with it. Both of these pressures are eased in a student/teacher relationship.

4) The student is inexperienced in the world of dating and isn't aware of signs that the realtionship may be failing or doomed. The teacher is noticing his/her own quirkiness is not throwing the student off, and interprets that as a sign the relationship is meant to be.

5) Required daily exposure and social interaction, multiplied over the hundreds of students a year (and tens of teachers) forces some kind of relationship on everyone. This relationship can develop under the discovery of common interests into something more.
