Erectile dysfunction can have an underlying clinical cause. Atherosclerosis is just one good example. Since an erection is basically a function of bloodflow, it can be a good indicator for underlying diseases of the heart or vascular system. Since atherosclerosis causes roughly half the deaths in the U.S., erectile dysfunction should absolutely be referred to a qualified physician.

A physician will assess general health and decide if a referral to either a urologist or a cardiologist is called for. Erectile dysfunction can also be caused by psychological and mental causes, and a doctor can assist with simple tests to determine if one's erectile dysfunction is physical or psychological in nature.

Only after a qualified physician rules out an underlying vascular condition as a possible cause should you consider natural remedies. If the underlying cause is psychological, there are a wide variety of things that will work for different people. Some ideas to consider are:
Stress relief through meditation, yoga, or therapeutic massage.
General health improvement through diet and physical exercise.

Because there are many possible causes for erectile dysfunction, one should not just pick one remedy at random. One should absolutely first see a qualified physician, since some causes of erectile dysfunction are potentially life-threatening.
