They didn't. They came off while he was just sitting there. Hahaha!

According to The Smoking Gun, "It appears that the chairlift's fold-down seat was somehow not in the lowered position, which caused the man to partially fall through the resulting gap. His right ski got jammed in the ascending chairlift, and that kept him upended since his boot never dislodged from its binding."

Part of his pants got caught on the ski lift seat, so when he fell his pants were stuck on the lift.
