Trying to replace one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood is a gamble. Their best bet is to cut their losses and go into syndication.

If CBS comes up with a replacement and carries on with it, then the rumors and I quote "rumors" are that the replacement of Sheen could be either of these guys - John Stamos, Rob Lowe, Tim Daly or Neil Patrick (and they all are busy with their respective shows). So, it is solely up to the CBC whatever it deems practical.
Now regarding Sheen, he shouldn't think he is invincible. There had been a handful of incidents in the past where famous characters in lead roles left a show in crisis - their replacement was found and the show went on successfully for good length of time.
CNN.com in an article stated that Sheen should remember that he himself had gone through this kind of a 'replacement' as in 2000 when Michael Fox left the comedy series "Spin City" for some health problems, Sheen ‘was’ the replacement. Sheen worked for two years for Spin City before he starred in Two and a Half Men. It further stated that when William Petersen of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" left the series midway, he was replaced by Laurence Fishburne (in a different role though) and the show did well in ratings.
Fox News showed concerns about the prime-time ratings when American Idol’s judge Simon Cowell left, but today everything is in place and working well with the new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez. Similar replacements were done in Law & Order and ER.
Now, the question is if replacement is done, are the mighty viewers going to accept it? It depends a lot on 'who' is the replacement and 'how' he breaks the Sheen’s style of ‘Harper’ image and replaces it with a ‘new style of Harper’. Harper needs very extensive and intensive deconditioning to be able to free himself from the ‘sleazy ghosts’ of Charlie Sheen.
