1. In order to catch bugs you will need a net.
2. Bugs can be caught just about anywhere. Some of them will be flying around, some will be hanging out on tree trunks and some will be on the ground. Some of them, like the bee, you need to shake a tree to get a hive to fall out first.
3. Yes, different bugs will be out in different seasons and even in different months and at different times of day.
4. Yes, Tom Nook will buy bugs off you. Some of them - the really rare ones - will fetch you quite a hefty amount of gold.
If you catch all of the bugs, you can also get the Golden Net. The important thing to remember in trying to catch bugs, is that you need to be sneaky or they will run/fly away. Be sure to walk very slowly up to them and then quickly swing your net to catch them.

Bugs are mostly like fish in Animal Crossing. There are some rare kinds that sell for a lot of money. Also, be careful, some bugs need to be approached slowly. Don't just run everywhere.

Can someone describe in detail how to catch bugs in Animal Crossing: City Folk?
I'm looking for someone who can write a detailed explanation on how to catch bugs in Animal Crossing: City Folk. I'd like for it to be as detailed as possible as I know absolutely nothing on the topic. Here are some questions that you could answer in your response:
- What do I need to catch bugs?
- Where do I catch bugs?
- Can some bugs only be caught in certain seasons?
- Does Tom Nook buy bugs? If so, can you make good money selling bugs?

Here is a really comprehensive (and pretty) insect guide I found online. You can filter your search by month and time of day. http://alliscrossing.com/catalog/catalog.aspx?t=2
