There are always risks when running third party software on a machine, especially when you are modifying the machine.
This being said, i have just recently installed the homebrew channel on my wii, and I am very satisfied with my new dvd player :)
As far as mods go, this is very low risk, and as long as you follow instructions, there should be very little risk in running homebrew apps on your wii.
Here's the guide that I used, which worked perfectly. Follow it and you will be fine.

All future updates may do is momentarily stop people from using the Twilight Hack for about a week until they find out how to reimplement it, but it won't destroy the system retroactively.

Are there risks to hacking my Wii to run homebrew, using the Twilight Hack or the new Homebrew Channel?
Can I brick my Wii, the way you can brick your PSP? If so, what fixes are there or is it irreparable?

Absolutely, Wiis can become bricked. See my source for some information on the different kinds of 'bricking' a Wii can experience, as well as advice on how to prevent it from happening.

I've added the Homebrew channel, it's very safe for this sort of thing. There is theoretically a possibility of it getting bricked, but what greg d says will not happen. Future updates will not brick the Wii just because you ran the Twilight Hack. Nintendo would be stupid to kill about an eighth of the Wiis out there in an attempt to stop the homebrew community. All future updates may do is momentarily stop people from using the Twilight Hack for about a week until they find out how to reimplement it, but it won't destroy the system retroactively.
