OPEN THREAD: Plaxico Burress pleads guilty to gun charges

National Football League wide receiver Plaxico Burress pleaded guilty to gun possession charges this morning in a plea deal that will put him in prison for two years.

Was the plea agreement a good choice considering he could have gone away for a lot longer, or does this admission of guilt ruin his chances of playing football later on? Thoughts?

I think pleading guilty was the right move to lessen the sentence. The plea bargain terms are for a lesser charge than what he otherwise would have faced and I’m not sure how he would have tried to work a “Not Guilty” plea.

The guilty plea won’t have much impact either way on the NFL allowing him to play again. If anything, it probably helps a little. Most people seem willing to give others a second chance (especially if they’ve paid the debt for their crime – or at least part of the debt), so that probably helps him with the NFL. The problem is that he will be 34 and out of the league for two years when he gets out of prison. The simple fact is that guys in their mid-30’s just aren’t as productive. Burris will get a shot (pun intended), with a team when he is released from prison and so in that regard, I think this is a good move. It’s just that with one maybe two years of mediocre football life after that, I don’t think it’s going to make much difference.

I think it was the right move also. However he should have done it sooner. The D.A. offered him a much better deal previously. He would have done 3 months in prison and 1500 hours of community service. http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2009/05/report_new_york_giants_burress_2.html

Three months in prison would be easier to digest than two years in prison. Plus by now, he would be moving forward with his life.

I think the sentence is very severe, He was stupid, thoughtless, and potentially very dangerous, but people commit far more serious crimes and get shorter sentences. Would someone convicted of assault, burglary, or robbery have to bargain down to two years? Donte Stallworth got drunk behind a wheel and killed someone, How is that not worse?

It was a good choice in my opinion. He was made an example from the start and we all know what judges to people they want to make examples of. Look at Michael Vick. He served two years in prison for dog fighting. Plaxico could of gotten worse in my opionion and he manned up and took responsponsibilty for his actions. This admission of guilt doesn't ruin his chances of playing in the NFL again though, his age does. He will be 34 years old when he finishes his sentence.
