Nexus One (aka Google Phone) or Dell Streak (aka Dell Mini 5): Which is the Best Android Phone?

I'm considering getting the Nexus One with AT&T or waiting for the Dell Streak 5 (also AT&T). Does anyone have thoughts on these devices?

Here are the pros and cons as I see them:

Pros:

  • 3.7in screen is small enough to comfortably carry
  • 1GHz Snapdragon processor
  • Android 2.1
  • AMOLED Screen makes for vibrant colors and good battery life
  • Been on the market long enough for the bugs to be worked out and for 3rd party accessories to be available
  • A few ounces lighter than the Dell Streak
  • Unlocked and won't require a 2yr contract
  • Dual microphones with great noise cancellation technology

Cons:

  • Smaller screen than Dell Streak
  • AMOLED is harder to see in bright light, especially direct sunlight
  • No carrier subsidy for most companies
  • Won't work with a stylus for taking notes, drawing, etc.
  • Only 512MB of internal flash memory (plus microSD slot)
  • Weaker camera flash than Dell Streak)

Pros:

  • Glorious 5in screen in true wide 16:9 screen format
  • Large enough to serve as a mini-tablet, media player, etc.
  • Rumored to be capacitive over resistive screen, which would support stylus
  • 4GB Internal flash memory (plus microSD slot)
  • Front facing web cam in addition to main camera on back (for video calls, etc.)
  • DUAL LED flashes for the camera
  • Gorilla Glass Screen is very scratch resistant

Cons:

  • MIGHT have Android 2.0 instead of 2.1 (reports vary)
  • Heavy (half a pound)
  • Big screen makes it a bit harder to carry as a phone
  • Some reports say phone interface isn't aesthetically pleasing
  • Likely won't be released for another month (potential for bugs, less 3rd party accessories ready, etc.)

It seems like the Nexus One may be the better phone in terms of a device to make and receive calls on, but it also seems like the Dell Streak will be the better convergence device, provide a much better browsing and reading experience and still be an OK phone. With two cameras, multitasking and a more open App store, the Streak seems much more useful than the new iPad.

Since the Nexus One isn't subsidized by most carriers, it will likely cost about the same or even a tad more than the Dell Streak, depending on what sort of subsidy AT&T gives the Dell Streak.

A 5 inch half pound weight in a belt holster could get annoying, yet it will probably allow me to leave the Kindle and iPod behind on short outings which means less stuff to carry and less total weight. Also, with a screen that large and remote desktop software, I could conceivably connect to a work PC and check the status of a running process without too much squinting and scrolling.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.
