In many Asian cultures, it is common to take one's life if there is a scandal, humiliation, or loss of "face". He was well known for being clean cut and that wasn't the case, as many found out. He could not bear for people to confront him with the loss and he could not tolerate the disgrace. I know many Asian people who would rather commit suicide than have their disgrace be a burden on their family.
