I think it was an elaborate scheme of the brothers to make the parents flip their lids. I can imagine the big brother telling balloon boy, "Go hide and I'll cut the balloon loose and tell Mom and Dad you were in it! HA HA HAAAA!" It's probably not as funny as he thought it would be now ;)

I'm honestly thinking he would have fell out...otherwise I would imagine him running to safety from being so scared.
